Trump says transgender bathroom debate is less important than other issues

President-elect Donald Trump said there are more important issues than the transgender bathroom debate when asked about his Time profile of Person of the Year.

“I don’t want to talk about bathrooms,” Trump said. “Because we’re talking about a tiny minority and it’s tearing our country apart, they have to address whatever the law ultimately agrees to. I’m a big believer in the Supreme Court and I will follow their rulings to this point. So far, I think their ruling is one that people agree with, but we’re talking about a very small number of people and we’re talking about it and it’s getting widespread coverage and not a lot of people.

Trump was asked if he agreed with transgender Rep.-elect Sarah McBride, D-Delaware, who said they should focus more on transgender issues than those led by Republican Rep. Nancy Mace. The gender toilet debate is a more important issue.

“I do agree with that. On that – absolutely agree. Like I said, it’s a small group of people,” Trump said.

Trump was asked specifically about a campaign ad his team ran that focused on the message: “Trump is for us, [Kamala] Harris is for them/them.

“Well, that’s true, Trump supports us,” Trump responded. “I mean, Trump absolutely supports us, okay? We’re the vast majority of people in this country. And, I want everybody to be treated fairly. You know, forget about the majority or not. I want people to be treated fairly. Treated well and fairly.

Trump also took aim at Harris’ media strategy in an interview with Time magazine, suggesting she should give more interviews. Harris avoided formal interviews at the start of the campaign and stepped up her media appearances in the final weeks.

“I think they made a huge tactical mistake, they didn’t talk to the media at all, even though they were really friendly, I mean, they were almost always friendly, and someone would come up with a really friendly person – maybe Just like you – but friendly interviews, they turned everyone down,” he said. “They won’t do basic interviews. People, myself included, will start saying, what’s wrong with her? What’s wrong? Why don’t you do some basic interviews?”
