Travel warning: Chaos for Britons in Spain as strike action looms

As British holidaymakers flock to UK airports ahead of the Easter weekend, those heading to Spain have been told to brace for disruption.

Today, the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) warned Britons about planned industrial action in Tenerife that could affect tourists’ plans.

“Industrial action is planned in the hospitality sector in Tenerife over the Easter bank holiday weekend,” Britons were told.

“If you’re due to travel to Tenerife this weekend, check your operator’s advice and follow the advice of authorities.”

The industrial action is scheduled for April 17 and April 18, affecting around 80,000 hotel industry employees.

According to local reports, as well as Tenerife, the strike is set to impact workers in three other Canary Islands: La Palma, La Gomera, and El Hierro.

This follows the rejection of the latest proposal from employers’ associations, despite mediation efforts by Fernando Clavijo, President of the Canary Islands.

The proposed agreement included a 6 per cent salary increase, the implementation of adjustable beds, and establishing a negotiation table before April 30 to address other labour concerns.

In good news for some holidaymakers, not all the Canary Islands will be affected by the Easter industrial action.

Indeed, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, and Fuerteventura were able to avert the strike after reaching an agreement.

But for British tourists visiting La Palma, La Gomera, and El Hierro over the Easter weekend, the strikes could have an impact.

However, holidaymakers have been assured that the Canary Islands government has mandated minimum service levels to maintain essential operations during this time.

These range from 15 per cent to 25 per cent in key areas such as reception, cleaning, maintenance and food services.

This measure aims to reduce disruption while allowing industrial action to proceed.

Last weekend, flooding in Lanzarote prompted a state of emergency, with the worst-affected municipalities including Arrecife, Teguise and San Bartolomé.

The state of emergency has since been lifted, although the FCDO advised holidaymakers to remain vigilant.

Any visitors should “follow the advice of local authorities and monitor local weather updates”.

Spain is a beautiful destination and the most popular among British holidaymakers, who flock in their masses for sun, sea, sand, delicious cuisine and affordability.

However, for a safe, well-informed trip, Britons should always consult the FCDO’s latest guidance before heading to the holiday spot. This will include the most up-to-date information on warnings and insurance, entry requirements, safety and security, health and getting help.
