Tourists in Portugal and Spain provided update as ‘travel disruptions’ still likely after power outage

Travel disruptions continue across parts of Europe today following widespread power outages that struck mainland Spain, Portugal, and Andorra yesterday.

The blackouts, which occurred on Monday, April 28, have now largely been resolved according to the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO); however, airlines including easyJet, Jet2 and TUI are still managing the aftermath of the disruption.

The FCDO has advised travellers that whilst power has been restored to most areas, some disruption remains.

It said: “We are monitoring the situation. There may still be some travel disruption; check with your tour operator or airline for more information before travelling. Follow the advice of the local authorities and monitor local updates.”

Airline easyJet has confirmed that many of its flights are operating as planned but is offering assistance to affected passengers.

The airline stated: “If you are due to travel today or tomorrow, please go to Flight Tracker on the easyJet app or online to check your flight status before you leave for the airport.

For travellers who have missed their flight, the carrier is arranging free transfers to alternative easyJet flights departing within 72 hours of the original booking.

Jet2 has reported that all its flights are currently operating normally despite yesterday’s electrical outage.

The airline stated: “Should there be any changes, we will provide further updates here, and we will be in contact with you via SMS and email.

“Check-in will close 40 minutes before your scheduled departure, so please arrive at the airport at least two hours before this time.”

TUI has acknowledged the power outage affecting mainland Spain and Portugal and is also “closely monitoring the situation” to support travellers.

The company clarified that the Balearic Islands, Canary Islands, Azores, and Madeira were not affected by the blackouts.

TUI noted: “If you experience any disruption getting to the airport in destination or miss your flight due to the power outage, please don’t worry. Our teams are ready to help you with your travel arrangements.

“We are contacting affected guests directly, but if you need immediate assistance, please reach out to our Customer Service Team.”

The FCDO has also issued new travel advice for Tanzania, with updated information on visiting islands and coastal areas south of Kisiju.

This update follows an alert from the US Embassy on March 21 advising its nationals to “avoid” these regions.
