Padres re-sign Logan Gillaspie to minors deal

Padres sign right-hander Logan Gillaspie Gillaspie signed a minor league contract earlier this month, according to his MLB.com profile page. Gillaspie, 27, will be entering his second season with the organization after the Padres held off on tendering him in November to create 40-man roster space.
Gillaspie made 28 appearances for the Orioles in 2022-23, posting a 4.10 ERA in 26 1/3 innings before the Red Sox claimed him off waivers in September 2023. Time didn’t lead to any major league playing time or overall, and that continued long enough for San Diego to claim him on another waiver claim two months later. The Padres have taken Gillaspie back and forth from Triple-A players as many as five times, and the shuffling of assignments could affect his performance — Gillaspie allowed 11 1/3 innings in nine games with San Diego. The ERA was 7.15.
On the bright side, Gillaspie posted a 3.77 ERA, 21.5% strikeout rate, and 9.7% walk rate in 45 1/3 innings with Triple-A El Paso. Those decent numbers look even better in the context of the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League, and they represent another step forward for Gillaspie to build on his 2022-23 Triple-A performance. That said, Gillaspie’s strikeout numbers have dropped over the past two seasons, while his walks have increased a bit.
Gillaspie is no longer a minor league option, so if the Padres option his contract to the active roster next season, the team will have to try to put him through waivers in order to send him back to Triple-A. If Gillaspie’s 2025 campaign ends up being a series of DFAs and immediate assignments, it could put Gillaspie in another form of lineup trouble, but for now, he’ll remain in the minor leagues in the Padres’ system Bullpen depth.
