Tiger shark hunts ‘on alert’ just inches from beach

The Florida Keys Visitors Bureau this week shared dramatic footage showing a tiger shark chasing a sea turtle on a beach as something to think about “next time you’re considering visiting the Florida Keys.”

The company added: “The wild beauty of the ocean always keeps you on your toes in paradise.”

While tiger sharks can be encountered near Florida, the footage was filmed near Western Australia last January. Photographer Ruth Gaw told FTW Outdoors the shark was 8 feet long, but the hunt was unsuccessful.

“The turtle escaped and the shark didn’t stay long,” Gao said. “A large stingray was also chased in, but I had stopped recording when it happened.”

Tiger sharks are about 18 feet long and are found in tropical and temperate waters around the world.

Florida Museum: “Tiger sharks are second only to white sharks in the number of reported attacks on humans.

“The tiger shark is generally curious and non-aggressive when encountered, but it is one of the three species most commonly responsible for shark attacks and fatalities and should be treated with the utmost caution and respect.”
