Hockey legend Wayne Gretzky has been criticized by his fellow Canadians for apparent support for President Donald Trump.
Trump expressed disdain from countries in the north because it should be the “51st country” and imposes tariffs on Canadian goods.
Gretzky was appointed honorary captain of Canada before the United States faced the championship against Canada in four countries in Boston, and he was opposed.

This prompted hockey legend Bobby Orr Toronto Sun He was disappointed when he read the criticism he considered to be one of the “greatest Canadians of all time.”
“How fickle people can become when people who have put a lot of time and energy into Canadian hockey are treated like this,” Orr column said. “Listen, we all have personal beliefs related to things like religion and politics. Wayne respects you’re right to that belief- why can’t you respect him?”
Wayne’s wife, Janet Gretzky, saw Orr’s column, and she responded on social media.
“Thanks Mr. Bobby Orr. Your words are the world of Wayne and his family, and I have never seen anyone who takes pride in being a Canadian, who is sad to read and see mean comments. He will do everything he can to make Canadians proud of hockey and his country’s love.

Trump recently said he asked Gretzky to be the next “Canadian governor” after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that he would resign.
But Trump declared Gretzky a “free agent” after Gretzky expressed support for “Canada remains an independent country, not a precious and beautiful 51st state.”
“I don’t want anyone in Canada to say anything to him,” Trump wrote in a social post on truth.

Gretzky joined Trump’s victory party in Trump’s 2024 election after Trump defeated Vice President Kamala Harris. Not long after, Gretzky was found wearing a magazine hat and attended Trump’s inauguration.
