It is said that it was a rebel supported by Rwanda and has been occupying the Democratic Republic of the Congo at a lightning speed. In a month, they defeated the Congolese army several times and caused more than 500,000 people to flee. In late January, the rebels captured Goma, a Congolese city with 3 million people along the border of North Dan.
The president of Rwanda denied that his country was arming rebels, or that his troops were in Congo.
The rebels, known as M23, said they are protecting the Tetussi, a minority massacre in the 1994 genocide, some of whom also live in Congo. However, experts say the group is a rare mineral in Congo.
UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell, “In the northern and southern provinces of Kivo, we are receiving terrorist reports of serious violations of children by all parties to the conflict, said in a statement. Save the children said there is evidence that 18 girls were sexually assaulted in the southern Kivo province and a 16-year-old girl was killed in resistance to an armed man.
“A mother told our staff how her six daughters, the youngest 12-year-old, were systematically raped by armed personnel while searching for food,” she said.
The leaders of the rebel group vowed to bring orders and security to the areas they control.
