The proposed bill will require Minnesota law enforcement, government agencies to work with ICE

Minnesota lawmakers recently introduced a bill that would prevent state and local government agencies from not allowing employees to share immigration data required by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

The bill also requires county prosecutors to report any illegal immigrants arrested for violent crimes, even if they are not prosecuted and prohibits law enforcement from not working with ICE.

Sponsored by state Rep. Max Rymer, R-North branch, Minnesota law enforcement and government agencies, is no longer allowed to create “statutes, regulations, and policies that restrict or prohibit government employees from communicating with federal officials about an individual’s immigration status.”

This would require agencies to work with federal officials on issues involving immigration enforcement and investigate any violations.

“The motivation for the bill is to open up a range of communication between local authorities and deal with dangerous offenders who should not be in our community,” Rymer told Fox 9 Minneapolis on Wednesday. “Currently, we find ourselves from the Mayor of Minneapolis to the Henping County Attorney at the moment when local officials openly revolt against immigration enforcement.”

The bill was introduced in February, which visited the Minnesota House of Representatives on Wednesday on Wednesday’s Public Safety Finance and Policy Committee, the Fox 9 reported. It will be sent to the House Election Finance and Government Operations Committee for further discussion after a vote.

The Minnesota Senate and Gov. Tim Walz, led by Democratic Farmers (DFL), will need to join the bill to sign the bill, a tough feat, considering the state’s commitment to maintaining a “sanctuary” rather than working with federal ice efforts.

Last year, DFL lawmakers introduced the Polaris Act to make Minnesota a shelter.

Those who support the bill pointed out that the state needs to follow federal immigration reform standards. But critics warn that large scopes can be used to target ethnic minority communities.

Ben Gleekel of the Minnesota Immigration Law Center told Fox 9 that the bill could make Minnesotans “not very safe”.

“Non-citizens and citizens victims of domestic violence and trafficking will suffer the most,” Glecker said. “If they know this means their families will be separated or may be arrested.

The agency said Wednesday that ICE has exceeded the total arrests in 2024.

The agency also found that tens of thousands of cases were recorded as arrests, which actually led to the issuance of the American community.
