Scottie Scheffler, the world’s No. 1 golfer, who had seven wins on Tour last season, the most since Tiger Woods in 2007, was honored Jack Nicklaus Award as the PGA Tour Player of the Year.
Scheffler won his second green jacket at the Masters, a gold medal at the Paris Olympics and a FedEx Cup title, the first since Woods (2005 to 2007) A golfer who has received this honor for three consecutive seasons.
“On behalf of the PGA Tour, I would like to congratulate Scotty Scheffler on a truly historic season and winning his first FedEx Cup,” Commissioner Jay Monahan said in a statement on Tuesday. champion and today won his third consecutive Jack Nicklaus Award as the PGA Tour Player of the Year. “Scotty has accepted the challenge of the best players in the world on the biggest stage all season long and was awarded the PGA Tour Player of the Year award. The title of Tour Player of the Year is the ultimate sign of the respect he has for his peers.”
Scheffler won his second straight title on Sunday at the Hero World Challenge, an unofficial tournament hosted by Woods in the Bahamas, adding to Scheffler’s nine wins around the world this year.
But he laughed off any comparison to Woods when speaking to the media on Tuesday night, calling it “a little silly.”
“There’s really only one tiger, that’s all,” he said. “I’m trying to get the best out of myself and that’s really all I’m focused on. I’m not chasing records or chasing history or anything like that, I’m just trying to keep improving a little bit day in and day out and just go out there. Race and have fun.
Notably, Scheffler finished first with 43% in 21 events in 2024, including the Olympics and Heroes. He also finished second twice. His on-field earnings last season were more than $29.2 million.
According to PGA Tour data, Scheffler received 91% of the votes from his peers. Xander Schauffele and Rory McIlroy, who won the PGA Championship and British Open, were the other golfers to receive votes.
PGA TOUR members who have played at least 15 events are eligible to vote for the award from Nov. 25 to Dec. 4.
This outcome certainly isn’t surprising considering Scheffler’s dominance in 2024. He is the first golfer to win The Players Championship, a major championship and the FedEx Cup in the same season.
The 28-year-old has also won titles in four signature events for elite fields: the Arnold Palmer Invitational, RBC Heritage, Memorial Championship and Travelers Championship. He had a tour-best 16 top-10 finishes in 19 starts and didn’t miss a cut.
Scheffler is the first golfer since Arnold Palmer in 1962 to win six PGA Tour events in a season before July 1.
“I mean, it’s hard to compare seasons, but I think in terms of the number of tournaments that I’ve won and having majors, the Players Championship and the Olympics, I think when you look at the whole season, I think that’s the most Good golf I’ve played in my career,” Scheffler said. “Look at a year like 2022, I won a lot at the beginning of the year, but I didn’t win a lot in the second half of the year. And then last year I played such good golf the whole year, but I didn’t win a lot last year. Three games, but it feels like I left something behind that I could have won.
“And then this year I felt like there were probably only a few events where I really had a good chance to win and I didn’t, and most of the year I felt like I took advantage of those opportunities and made putts when it really mattered.”
Scheffler also won the Byron Nelson Award for the lowest scoring average on Tour (68.65). He ranks first in hits earned: total (2.496) and near hits (1.269), and second in hits off the tee (.816).
“I think the biggest thing I see is he’s always trying to get better,” King said Sunday. “Despite having nine wins this year, he always finds little ways and I think it’s really cool to see that and you can get a lot out of it. His win rate is 95 percent.”
