Movie review (no spoilers)
Mrs. Webber, the fourth installment in Sony’s Spider-Man universe, brings us a different perspective on an all-new group of heroes in the heart of New York City. I need to remind readers to keep an open mind when watching the movie. The film follows Mrs. Weber and her role as protector of three young women who will play a bigger role in the future…hopefully. If you’re expecting Peter Parker/Spider-Man to catch a crook, you’ll be sadly disappointed.
I firmly welcome Marvel’s new take on Spider-Woman. Since Into the Spider-Verse , I’ve been thinking about whether we’d get a chance to see any Spider-Women on the big screen, and the question of “how?” I have always seen Cassandra Webb/Mrs. Webb in a motherly protector role. I personally think Dakota Johnson plays her role very well in this sense.
Sydney Sweeney, Isabela Merced and Celeste O’Connor play Julia Cornwall, The characters of Anya Corazon and Mattie Franklin are a breath of fresh air for the audience. According to the film’s villains, they will play important roles in the future. The film’s new villain, played by Tahar Rahim, is a thrilling experience at first, but ends up being easily defeated.

Mrs. Webb does a good job of introducing a new character, Mrs. Webb, but sadly doesn’t offer any promise of continuity and connection to any of the existing movies in the current universe. Some of the Easter eggs in the movie point to another beloved Marvel character, but I’d love to experience more of Cassie’s network and get a chance to provide a teaser for the movie’s other heroines, as there’s still a lot of story to be told. Unfortunately, there’s no post-credits scene, which is disappointing since Mrs. Spider-Man is part of Sony’s Spider-Man universe and continuity is what many were hoping for. I’m curious to see if we see continuity in subsequent installments, or even guest appearances from Cassie, Julia, Maddie, and/or Anya in any other installments.
I give this movie a 3 out of 5.
The trailer doesn’t spoil much of the storyline. Be sure to watch it on a big screen near you.
