When I moved from South Africa to Scotland a few years ago, I had to learn quickly about dressing for warmth if I wanted to continue spending most of my free time outdoors. Now, whether I’m dressing to climb mountains, go rockpooling with the kids, or simply take our dog for a walk, I typically reach for a fleece jacket first. I own several, ranging from a big, fluffy hooded one that replaces my winter coat on dry days to lightweight, low-pile styles that are the perfect mid-layer for activities that require breathability and warmth in equal measure.
Fleece jackets are typically made from polyester, a synthetic replacement for traditional sheep fleece that insulates well, wicks moisture, and is durable enough to cope with repeated washing. That’s not to say they’re all made equally. Fit, features, thickness, intended activity, and quality all vary considerably from one fleece to the next — which is why we decided to try a broad range of options on our quest to help you choose the best for you. Each of the fleece jackets on this list has been rigorously tested out in the real world and ranked highly by our team of travel experts.
Crafted in a Fair Trade Certified factory from 100 percent recycled polyester shearling fleece, the Patagonia Women’s Retro Pile Fleece Jacket is double-sided for extra insulation. We tested it on a chilly 15-degree day in New York City and found that it made us instantly toasty. The difference between wearing a coat alone and a coat with this fleece underneath was huge. It’s probably too warm for high-impact sports or mild shoulder season weather, but we were impressed with its breathability and the fact that despite its significant warmth, it’s neither too heavy nor too thick.
The fleece itself is exceptionally soft. Even better, it stayed soft after we spilled food on it and had to put it through the washing machine and dryer. It’s designed for a regular, hip-length fit with a full zipper for maximum versatility. We found that it fit as expected; we sized up for a more relaxed look and space for layering underneath. Elastic trim on the collar, cuffs, and hem keeps out cold drafts, while storage includes one chest pocket and two hand-warmer pockets. We also like that all three are large enough for an iPhone 14 and that they can be zippered closed to keep contents secure during active pursuits.

Available in pine green or a blue-and-white reef-inspired print, the Wild Rye Danner High-pile Fleece Pullover is so comfortable we think it feels like a big bear hug. The exterior is fluffy, plush, high-pile fleece, while the inside is lined with soft jersey. With a quarter-length neck opening fastened by concealed snaps and a surprisingly form-fitting silhouette, it’s designed to be cute enough for winter sightseeing while also cozy enough for lounging or sleeping. We tested it in a range of scenarios from brisk neighborhood walks to air-conditioned airports and loved it in all scenarios.
We found it warmer than some of our fall jackets, with a cut that flatters while still allowing for full freedom of movement. In particular, we liked that there’s plenty of breathing room around the abdomen area. An adjustable elasticated cord at the hem allows you to cinch the fleece for a more fitted look, or leave it loose for better breathability. We liked the giant zippered front pocket, which provides ample room for hands and valuables. We also like how easy the fleece is to maintain — just machine wash on cold and tumble dry on low.

The Cotopaxi Women’s Teca Fleece Full-zip Jacket is made from lightweight, low-pile fleece and as such works both as an outer layer for mild fall and spring days, and as an insulating mid-layer in winter. We found it effective at blocking the chill: so much so that we had to remove it when getting into the car to avoid overheating. The fleece feels soft to the touch and has just enough give to afford complete freedom of movement, and in fact we found it so comfortable that it was easy to forget we were wearing it at all.
Other features include an elastic hem and cuffs, and two slip-in hand pockets. We appreciated that these are lined with a wipe-clean material that made us less hesitant to put potentially messy items (food wrappers etc.) in our pockets. The fleece is sustainably made from recycled and repurposed polyester and comes in a range of unique colorways, all with three contrasting stripes across the chest. Finally, the fleece remained unchanged in feel and appearance after machine washing and drying.

With its comfortable, stretchy fit and high-quality construction, this fleece is ideal for active outdoor adventures.
Fjallraven’s Women’s Expedition Fleece Hoodie is made from a recycled, abrasion-resistant polyester and elastane blend that feels fuzzy on the inside and smooth on the outside. The quality is exceptional (we feel this is a fleece that will last for years), while the thoughtful design helps to justify the elevated price tag. It’s meant as a mid-layer for running or hiking in cold weather. As such, the fleece is breathable, moisture-wicking, and quick to dry while the fit is snug enough to be worn comfortably under a heavier outer layer.
Despite the relatively tight fit, the material is sufficiently stretchy, so we didn’t feel restricted in any way. Raglan sleeves also help prevent chafing when wearing a backpack by allowing for greater underarm movement. We loved the fitted hood, which traps warmth effectively while also fitting seamlessly under an outer hood. Extended cuffs with thumbholes to keep your hands and wrists warm are another highlight. The fleece also boasts zippered hand pockets and can be machine washed.

Made for the ultimate combination of style and comfort, we loved the Helly Hansen Women’s Maud Pile Fleece Jacket so much that we wore it almost daily during the test period for everything from city commutes to weekend brunches. It’s made from soft brushed fleece, with a nice weight and a flattering drape. The fit is deliberately oversized, with an extra-length hem that covers the hips and bottom. We think this feature is fairly unique for a fleece and loved how stylish it looked over jeans and leggings alike. We also liked the unusual curved hem.
Other highlights include decent-length sleeves, a generously sized hood that fits easily over a bun or high ponytail, and deep, conveniently placed pockets. We found the latter practical for stashing keys and phones, but also great for keeping hands warm on chilly days. One thing to be aware of: with no lining, the coat doesn’t block wind completely. This makes it more of an urban fashion choice for mid-fall than for extreme cold or technical outdoor sports. It’s machine washable and dryer safe, and comes in cream, olive, or navy.

The Columbia Women’s Benton Springs Full-zip Fleece Jacket features a 100 percent polyester construction that is very soft, exceptionally comfortable, and breathable enough that you can wear it inside, too. Because it’s relatively lightweight, it’s best as a mid-layer on very cold days or standalone piece during shoulder season.
We found that it fit as expected and liked that we could cinch the hem using the adjustable drawcord. If you’re between sizes, size up for layering space and unhindered freedom of movement. Features include a cold-blocking collar, interior slip pockets, and zippered hand pockets that are deep enough to store a phone or gloves securely. The fleece remained unchanged after machine washing and drying, and comes in a full range of sizes to suit all body types.

Other Fleece Jackets We Liked
Although we didn’t love these fleeces enough to include them in our main list of recommendations, they’re nevertheless worthy picks that may suit some travelers.
Sundae School Kloudy Bay Fleece: If you’re interested in a statement piece, the Kloudy Bay Fleece from Korean streetwear brand Sundae School is the one for you. It features a custom Bay Area print complete with a Pointillist Golden Gate Bridge, it’s the kind of statement piece that’s guaranteed to turn heads, but may not be to everyone’s style preference.

Sierra Butter Pile II Jacket: This was one of the deepest pile fleeces we tested and as such, easily wearable as a stand-alone outer layer. We found it to be comfortable and warm, but it shed a significant amount of fluff when washed.
Travel + Leisure
L.L.Bean Hi-pile Fleece Pullover: There was a lot we liked about this jacket including its soft, double-sided fleece, its deep-pile warmth, and its durability. However, it’s not particularly breathable and the sizing runs small.

Topo Designs Global Midlayer Hoodie: We loved the fit, feel, and features of this technical midlayer and would recommend it for athletic pursuits. However, it’s too thin to be warm when worn on its own for everyday use during shoulder season.

Our Testing Process
When we first received each fleece jacket, we put them on and noted our initial impressions of its fit, feel, and features. We evaluated the quality and thickness of the fleece, whether the jacket fit as expected, whether we were able to move freely while wearing it, and the functionality of the pockets. Next, we tested the breathability of the fabric by holding one of the sleeves up to our mouth, blowing air through it, and seeing how much air reached our other hand held six inches away on the other side. If we felt too much air, it suggested that the fabric might not be insulative enough for use in windy conditions; but being able to feel a small amount of air was a positive indicator of breathability.
Each fleece was then worn for at least three two-hour wears. We wore them for a range of different activities, from commuting to traveling to hiking and running errands. This helped us to form a broader understanding of the jacket’s warmth and comfort, as well as the weather and activities it was best suited to. Finally, we washed the fleece according to the manufacturer’s instructions to establish whether doing so affected it in any way. Each fleece was scored for fit, design, performance, durability, and value, with long-term testing ongoing for a period of six months.
Tips for Buying a Fleece Jacket
Prioritize warmth and comfort
Although you can definitely get fleece jackets that look good, they’re generally not a high fashion item. For me, the most important thing is that they serve their primary function (keeping me warm) and that they’re comfortable enough that I actually want to wear them. Exactly how much warmth you require depends on your chosen activity and season. For example, if I’m dressing for a winter beach walk when I know the icy North Sea wind is going to be out in full force, I’ll choose a heavyweight, high-pile fleece with a wind-proof lining. But if I’m wearing a fleece as a mid-layer for a strenuous hike, I want something lighter and more breathable so I don’t overheat when I work up a sweat. My top tip for comfort? Choose a fleece with a slightly oversized fit that allows space for layering without restricting movement, especially around your shoulders.
Don’t forget about breathability
Consider how much breathability you’re likely to need from your fleece before deciding which one to buy. If you’re going to be wearing it in extreme cold and/or for largely low-impact or sedentary activities, breathability isn’t a particular priority. But for all other occasions (like hiking or jogging), some breathability is key. Look for products that specifically mention breathability and performance materials.
Look for technical features
Again, the importance of different features depends on how and when you’ll be wearing your fleece. If I’m using mine as a top layer, I tend to pick one with a hood so that I have protection from any unexpected wind or precipitation. A fitted hood is most effective for this purpose. But if I’m wearing my fleece as a mid-layer under another coat that already has a hood, I find that having a second hood feels too bulky and restrictive.
Similarly, whether or not I’m pairing the fleece with another coat makes a big difference as to how much I prioritize things like water-resistance and even having zippered pockets. Because I like to hike, scramble, and run after my kids and dog, I always want at least one zippered pocket to keep my keys and phone safe. But if my outer coat has one, it’s not as important on my fleece. One feature I always appreciate? Elasticated cuffs and hems that can be cinched tight to keep out cold drafts.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
What is fleece?
Although the name “fleece” is derived from the term for sheep’s wool, the fleece that’s used for clothing today is generally a synthetic alternative made from polyester or other man-made fibers. It’s created to resemble the soft, fluffy texture of sheep fleece, with the length of the pile varying depending on the amount of softness and insulation required. Generally, the higher the pile, the warmer the fleece will be. Fleece is a popular choice for outdoor clothing because its texture traps body heat to provide an impressive warmth-to-weight ratio. Polyester is also naturally water repellent and moisture wicking, and is both hard-wearing and easy to maintain — making it ideal for adventure clothing that is likely to require frequent washing.
-
How should a fleece jacket fit?
A fleece jacket should be comfortable and provide full freedom of movement. Some technical fleeces incorporate a percentage of elastane so that they can be close-fitting (for maximum lightweight streamlining) while still affording enough stretch for unhindered mobility. But for more casual fleeces with a 100-percent polyester content, I prefer a regular to slightly oversized fit. This prevents the likelihood of tightness around the shoulders, underarms, and torso. It also increases versatility by allowing space for a variety of layers underneath. For this reason, I always size up if I’m between measurements on the brand’s size guide.

How do you care for a fleece jacket?
Fleece jackets are usually fairly low maintenance, especially if they’re made from pure polyester. Most of the jackets I own can be machine washed on a cool setting and tumble dried on low. Before washing your fleece, we always recommend checking the manufacturer’s instructions carefully, since guidelines do vary from product to product.
