Texas School District Warns Parents Border Patrol May Question or Deport Students

A Texas school district sent parents a letter Wednesday warning that the Border Patrol may be boarding a school bus and that their children may be detained or deported.
The letter was also posted to Facebook but was later deleted, warning that U.S. Border Patrol agents might board a school bus for extracurricular activities at highway checkpoints and request to view proof of legal citizenship.
“We want to get your attention on important issues regarding student travel to participate in extracurricular activities, including sports, bands and other classmate activities,” Alice Independent School District Anysia Trevino wrote in the letter. “We received Information suggests that U.S. Border Patrol agents may be boarding a school bus at a highway checkpoint to ask students about their citizenship.”

The letter said that students are unable to provide proper identification or documentation and continues to warn that students may hinder their future acquisition of our citizenship if they lie about their immigration status.
“Families are strongly encouraged to be aware of the potential impact of these encounters. If students are found to have no proper documentation, they can be removed from the bus, detained and may be deported under current immigration policies. In addition, if students are not in the right way, they can be removed from the bus, detained, and may be deported. , then provided false information about their citizenship, which was later discovered, which could lead to the permanentity of future U.S. citizenship.”
Federal Immigration Law currently states that individuals who become U.S. citizens may be disqualified from obtaining green cards or U.S. citizenship.

The principal did suggest she was looking for ways to add measures to mitigate the impact and said any parents with concerns should address it.
“To ensure families are fully informed, we are reviewing students’ travel exemptions, which may include language that provides parents with such possibility,” the letter reads.
“In addition, we are considering taking other measures, such as having the designated partner vehicle travel with the school bus. If the student is detained, the school administrator of the partner vehicle will be able to stay with the students in groups to continue their journey.”
This is not the first school district to address changes in immigration policy. West Oso ISD recently sent a letter to parents warning them about changes in policy and informing them about the school’s procedures.
“I want to take some time to address the latest changes in immigration policies and how they affect our area. Recently, the Department of Homeland Security reversed previous policies that restrict immigration and customs enforcement (ICE) arrests (ICE) at sensitive locations, such as schools, Hospitals and places of worship,” it reads.

The letter continues that they welcome all students regardless of their citizenship.
“WOISD does not require, collect or maintain any information about immigration status as this has nothing to do with our mission to serve students. Any action on our campus shall be executed in one of our schools and we will immediately Notify parents.
A DHS spokesman clarified in a statement issued in January that Homeland Security Secretary Benjamin Huffman issued two directives authorizing law enforcement to protect Americans.

The first of these directives revokes the Biden administration’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement Guidelines (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection Measures (CBP) enforcement actions that prevent law enforcement agencies in or near so-called “sensitive” areas .

“This action has given the brave men and women of CBP and ICE to give us immigration laws and seized murderers and rapists including those who illegally enter our country. Criminals will no longer be able to hide in the United States. schools and churches to avoid arrests. The Trump administration will not tie our brave hands to enforce the law, but trust them to use common sense.”
Now, the operation allows law enforcement to access schools, medical facilities and places of worship to arrest undocumented immigrants. It also allows ICE agents to operate in activities previously protected in policies, including weddings, funerals and public demonstrations.
