Texas Governor Greg Abbott asks state employees to return to the office full time

Texas Governor Greg Abbott recently announced that he would reflect the Trump administration’s mandate to return to work, requiring federal workers to require all state employees to return to the workplace.

Republican Abbott announced this week that he will require all state employees to return to the office full-time five days a week.

The move comes as President Donald Trump said in his speech to Congress on Tuesday that thousands of federal workers “didn’t show up at work.”

“My administration will regain power from this irresponsible bureaucracy and we will restore true democracy in the United States again,” Trump said Tuesday. “Any federal bureaucrat who resists this change will be removed from the office immediately because we are flooding the swamp.”

Abbott has not made a public deadline yet, but Texas Workforce Executive Director Ed Serna sent an email to thousands of employees saying they must return to the office full-time by March 31.

Deputy Press Secretary Eduardo Leal said in a statement to Fox News on Friday that Texans “want their civil servants to be present and do the job on their behalf.”

“National agencies have been in office and any remote work policy must ensure effective use of taxpayer money,” Leal wrote in a statement. “With remote federal workers returning to their offices where possible, it is important for state agencies to make sure they do so.”

Returning to the office will look different in each national institution and the plan will be formulated by leaders.

Under Texas government regulations, employees can meet the needs of agencies for a variety of reasons, such as if the employee’s work is conducted on site or limited office space due to pending renovations.

According to Fox 7, Texas Employees Union Vice President Myko Gedutis said the impact on state employees will be “significant”.

“Literally, there isn’t enough room for everyone to return. [to]in many of these locations,” he said.

Gedutis added that the agencies “a vast majority responded to remote work that worked in their favor,” noting that it saved money in recruiting and retention.

Davon Barbour, president and CEO of the Austin Downtown Alliance (DAA), told Fox News Digital that the city welcomes the return of federal employees working in person in the downtown area, calling it a “important step to strengthening the economic vitality of our city.”

“Building stable offices in the city center directly supports small businesses by increasing flow of people and enhancing the dynamic energy at the heart of our city,” the DAA said in a statement. “Small businesses in the city center rely on the stable needs created by office workers. This shift to face-to-face work will help maintain and grow these businesses, thereby promoting a thriving downtown environment.

“The Austin Downtown Alliance is looking forward to increasing growth in flows and economic activity.”

The Texas Workforce Commission did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.
