Check out our writers and editors weekly unfiltered opinions on the hottest topics in the sport and join the conversation by tweeting on @Golf_Com. This week, we discuss Jake Knapp’s 59-year-old, Scottie Scheffler’s dominance in Orlando and a surprisingly sponsor exemption.
After Jake Knapp shot 59 in unusually mild conditions in PGA National Championship course, some professionals want to know what happened to the Beast Trap. Is it unfair to score below 60 for the 15th time in PGA Tour history? Or does the 59 no longer have the same historical weight as before?
Zach: They just don’t mean what the past means. It doesn’t matter! We have been traveling along this road for a while. The stadium is supervised, it rains and has zero winds, and one of the best drivers on the tour makes it very good. Some people will definitely go lower. This is just inevitable.
Hesh: No, Sean, 59 is still 59. The PGANational is easier than before, but it’s still a rating of over 75 on the rear t-shirt. It was a tough golf course. Is it as difficult as before? No, this is unfortunate. But just because the 59 is easier to set up, that doesn’t make it impressive. I think if I could make a hole at 11, I wouldn’t be able to swing a club.
Desir: We asked these competitions to take a very, very good route. Is it too difficult? They were stripped of landslides and slow races. Is it too easy? Your 59 means nothing! But yes, that means less. Yes, it’s still cool. Yes, it’s fun to watch when this game suffers. But it’s hard to do all of this.
Scottie Scheffler defended his championship at this week’s Arnold Palmer Invitational, where he won two of his last three games. What makes Scheftler so good at Bay Hill, you’re going to be at Scheffler or Field this week?
Sean Zak, Senior Writer (@sean_zak): Scottie won the game because he played many hard-working standards over the weekend. Over the years, Orlando has promised cold weather and solid conditions, and long roughness, that makes the ball hit such a responsibility. There are both drivers and others. And no one has greens and fairways like Scheffler. Do enough and some birdie putts will fall. Feeling inevitable. Yes, Scottie did it again.
Jack Hirsh, Associate Device Editor (@jr_hirshey): What makes Scottie Scheffler so good in Bay Hill? The same thing makes him so good elsewhere: He is the best batsman on Earth. Of course there are horses for the course, but I think Scottie Scheffler is a favorite on almost every hard golf course. Soglas, Bay Mountain, Mohei Village, Port Town. These are the kind of courses with cream that always rise to the top, and Schefler is just the best player on earth. Tigers have also won in some of these places. I’m with Zak and Scheffler won his first win of the season this week. If you remember, he didn’t get his first win of last season until this week.
Senior writer Dylan Dethier (@dylan_dethier): Last year, Scottie made the birdie at the second highest speed and bogey speed. It’s a bit he won everything. But, yes – these guys introduced it. He scored his best, played smart, he had a lot of dogs in him, and Bay Hill was a demanding test. I’m excited about this week’s exam.
Report first golfJordan Spieth and Rickie Fowler will not receive a waiver from sponsors, the Arnold Palmer Invitational, a signature event with a 72-person field. While it’s easy to agree with Fowler’s comment on “At the end of the day, play better”, is it more complicated than that? Regardless of the current form, Spieth and Fowler are two huge attractions. With the rankings of pros still split and the best players are not on the same tour, is there any argument for loading the game with star power?
Zach: Very complicated! Webb Simpson accepted a bunch of these invitations last year and was criticized by his peer professionals. Adam Scott also accepted a bunch of invitations and performed well to finish in the foreshadowed FedEx Cup top 50. You want to invite players to cheer for fans, they will provide some PEP for sponsors, and you also want to be responsible for evaluating all options. It is lazy to choose only famous people. To his credit, Rafa Campos’ letter was dedicated to him and gave him a ticket to compete in his biggest match of the season.

Hesh: I’m here with Zak, too. If you are going to argue that Liv has diluted products because it handed the spots to someone who was supposed to be downgraded (look at you, Bubba) just to keep the draw, you shouldn’t argue with Spieth and Fowler. It’s interesting because Spieth seems to have found his game again and Fowler has had a great week cognitively, but apparently those decisions were made before that. I also like a heartfelt letter that still has some weight, I will pull up for Rafa Campos, who I accepted at college as Puerto Rico’s only PGA Tour player.
Desier: There must be an argument that can load the game with the power of stars! There is also an argument that the PGA Tour should rely on elite management and abandon invitations from these sponsors. If you want to have Em and keep anyone from getting angry, that is impossible. But this is probably the most thoughtful way to do it, even if you abandon some famous people.
Florida Junior High School Luke Clanton advanced in the Cognitive Classics (his ninth-place professional PGA Tour starts) to score a 20th point in the PGA Tour College Acceleration Program and secured his PGA Tour card at the end of the college season. As the top-ranked amateur and future tour player in the game, what should the average fan know about one of the most promising young talents in the game?
Zach: He not only made a bunch of cuts to win this tour card. This kid argues! repeatedly. He has been well suited for the famous name of the Tour. After entering the game, Datagolf gave Cranton a layoff, finishing the top 10 and winning the same way as Cameron Young. You know, everyone thinks it’s a good Ryder Cup asset. That’s Cranton’s man too.
Hesh: People need to realize how quickly he is about the rise of stars. He didn’t win his first point in the PGA Tour U acceleration program until last year’s U.S. Open, when he layed off staff and competed for low-level amateurs with Neal Shipley (Shipley beat him on the last hole after Clanton missed a tied birdie putt). But by the end of November, he scored 17 points, the fastest points accumulation in the program’s three-year history. Since 2010, the tour has announced accelerating the PGA Tour, with only three golfers going to win their tour through it. Clanton is now Gordon Sargent scored 20 points and postponed to his second of the season. This is just another example of a young player.
Desier: Should people know about Cranton? In high school, he won the Florida championship three times…and finished second in the second year. He could also be a Ryder Cup team.
Lydia Ko won the HSBC Women’s World Championship in Singapore on Sunday to win her 23rd professional LPGA victory. Nelly Korda has not competed, but she has two top 10 in two games this season. Who wins more victories in 2025: Korda or KO?
Zach: ko does it. She is already one! Having spent some time with Lydia recently, she seemed very focused. Today, she speaks a lot like Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler, which is a great company. We also accepted the Korda-Ko battle in early 2024, even at the Open in St Andrews. To be honest, it’s time for Corda to turn back.
Hesh: Earlier last season, KO also had one on Korda. For me, KO is actually third in the Rolex rankings Jeeno Thitikul, which is really surprising. That said, I think Corda has more proof after last season, which sounds weird. After watching KO win last season’s Open, she hopes to win more professionally this season.
Desier: Korda won more. But this is a good sign that we are asking this question. This KO era is a welcome addition to the golf landscape – fairy tales continue.

Netflix’s “Full in Full” season debuted last week. What you’ve seen so far is your favorite moment?
Zach: Haven’t seen much, but I’ll say that – definitely worth a look, except for the story of the 2024 PGA Tour, we think We know there are other camera angles you’ve never seen before. This is the treasure of these Docu followers for big sports fans. Just because you know what is going to happen doesn’t mean you know it Can Know. Maybe not the answer you are looking for, but various new angles we have never seen before.
Hesh: I’ve just started watching, too, but it’s cool to see Sean hiding behind a tree and Bryson hitting him up close for the 72nd time at Pinehurst. The plot about McIlroy and Lowry’s victory in Zurich is interesting. It’s nice to see their friendship really show up in the spotlight. But I’m a little worried that for new fans, they’ll think Zurich is the fifth major from that episode.
Desier: I’ve written more of a comprehensive exhibition about everything here, but make sure you stick with episode 6, Gary Woodland’s journey back from a horror battle with brain tumors is the best: real life, meaningful visits, the connection between life and golf, and the fanatic just kept up with good inspiration.
