South Korean fighter jets accidentally throw bombs during training exercises

During a training exercise Thursday, a South Korean fighter jet accidentally blew up a bomb in a civilian area, hurting multiple people.
The Air Force said in a statement that the MK-82 bomb released by the KF-16 fighter “abnormally” fell outside the range of shooting, causing unspecified civilian compensation.

Reports on the number of injured people vary, but South Korea’s Yonhap News Agency set the number at 15, including civilians and soldiers. Two of the injuries were reportedly severe but not life-threatening. At least seven buildings were damaged.

The Air Force said the fighter jets are participating in a joint live exercise with the Army. It apologized for the incident and promised to establish a committee to investigate the cause of the accident and the scope of the damage.

The Air Force has not yet said where the accident happened, but South Korean media reported that it happened in the city of Pocheon, a city near the armed border with North Korea.
