Six egg brands recalled due to salmonella contamination
Six different brands of eggs have been recalled in Canada due to possible salmonella contamination.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) recalled Golden Valley, Compliments, Foremost, IGA, No Name and Western Family eggs on Saturday (Jan. 18). The recall applies to different packages and sizes of eggs.
Only eggs from specific batch numbers are affected. A list of batch numbers is available on the CFIA website.
The agency warns that people should not consume, serve, use, sell or distribute the recalled products. The recalled eggs may be contaminated with salmonella and should be thrown away or returned to the store where they were purchased.
“Food contaminated with salmonella may not look or smell spoiled but can still make you sick,” the CFIA website reads.
Salmonella is a bacteria found in the intestines of animals and humans that can cause food poisoning. The foods most at risk tend to be animal products, such as raw meat, unpasteurized milk, undercooked poultry and eggs, but salmonella can also contaminate fruits and vegetables through fertilizers used on crops.

In the United States, the Food and Drug Administration last month raised the alert level for a Costco egg recall due to salmonella concerns.
The FDA revealed in December 2024 that the recall was a “Class I,” meaning “use or exposure to the violative product is likely to result in serious adverse health consequences or death.”
This is the most serious risk level an FDA recall can reach, and the classification change comes a month after Costcos in the southern United States recalled 10,800 retail units of organic eggs.
Handsome Brook Farms in New York is recalling 24-packs of Kirkland Signature-branded bags because they “may be contaminated with salmonella.”

The recall was initiated after Handsome Brook officials determined that eggs not intended for shipment to market were accidentally packaged and distributed to retailers, the FDA said in a press statement.
There are no known illnesses associated with the affected products. Similar to the current recall in Canada, consumers who own one of the affected cartons should return the eggs to their local Costco store for a full refund, or discard the eggs.
