Shooting at Wisconsin Christian school leaves three dead, including suspect

Three people, including the suspect, were killed in a shooting at a Christian school in Wisconsin, police said.

The shooting occurred at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison, the state capital, and sent nine people to the hospital in various conditions.

Police Chief Sean Barnes told a news conference that police believe the shooter was a “teenager” who was a student at the school.

“Today is a sad day, not just for Madison, but for our entire country,” he said.

“At approximately 10:57 a.m. this morning, our officers were responding to a report of an active shooter at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison.

“When police arrived, they found multiple victims suffering from gunshot wounds.

“We have officials from all over the county and state coming out to support.

“Police have located a teenager who they believe is responsible for the deaths in the building.

“We are aware that a total of about seven people were transported from the city to area hospitals for treatment.

“We know that at least four people were killed, including this teenager.”

According to the school’s website, the school has about 390 students, ranging from kindergarten to high school.

Sheriff Barnes called the incident a “tragic, tragic scene” and something “we are prepared for but hope we never have to” deal with.

“I feel a little frustrated,” he said. “It’s approaching Christmas and every kid, every person in the building is a victim and always will be a victim.

“These types of trauma are not going to go away. My heart is heavy for my community right now and we have to figure out what happened here and it doesn’t happen in any other place that should be a refuge for students.

He added that when the incident occurred, medical personnel on the scene were undergoing mass shooting training. They came directly to the shooting scene and implemented the training “on the fly.”

“This remains an active and ongoing investigation,” Madison police said in a statement.

“More information will be released as it becomes available. We currently ask people to avoid the area.

Gov. Tony Evers said in a statement on social media: “I am closely following the incident at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison.

“While we await more information, we pray for the children, educators and the entire Abundant Life School community, and are grateful to the first responders who responded quickly.”
