Scotus stops federal judge’s order to Trump manage foreign aid funds

U.S. Supreme Court Justice John Roberts stopped a federal judge’s order on Wednesday to ask the Trump administration to pay contractors about $2 billion in foreign aid funds by midnight.
The ruling was requested by a federal judge before midnight after the Trump administration asked the Supreme Court to issue an emergency order to prevent the release of funds from the United States International Development Agency (USAID). Officials said they would not be able to comply with the judge’s order.

Any response from groups fighting the Trump administration will expire before 12 p.m. on Friday, meaning the suspension may be relatively short-lived.

The Trump administration said it is eliminating more than 90% of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) foreign aid contracts and $60 billion in total U.S. aid globally to eliminate programs that eliminate most developments in the United States and humanitarian assistance abroad.
The government detailed cuts will provide advocates with little to no surviving AIA projects to save on the ongoing court battle with the government.

Wednesday’s disclosure also allowed the government to withdraw from the scale of U.S. aid and development aid and for decades, foreign aid helped U.S. interests by stabilizing other countries, economies and building alliances.

Officials “cleared a large amount of waste that has drifted institutions over decades,” the memo said. It plans to make more changes in the provision of foreign aid by the U.S. Agency for International Development and the State Department, “use taxpayer money wisely to promote U.S. interests.”

So far, the administration has filed an emergency appeal to the Supreme Court in another case, saying it was wrong for the lower court to restore heads of federal watchdogs after Trump’s dismissal.
