We all struggle with batting from time to time. Sometimes our swing becomes erratic and we can’t seem to find the hitting surface. When this happens, you feel like you’ll never play well again.
Of course, this isn’t true. While it may feel like solid shots are a thing of the past, in reality, you still have great golf in your future. Sometimes all you need to get over your fear is to keep things as simple as possible.
In the video below, John Daly explains a simple trick you can use to ensure a solid contact.
Daly’s solid contact skills
When you hit the ball shorter, it’s usually easier to find the sweet spot than when you hit the ball with a full swing. So the next time you’re struggling to land a solid shot, incorporate pitching techniques into your full swing.
“Let’s shorten the club,” Daley said. “I just choked and hit the ball normally – almost like a chop. The swing gets shorter, but the ball is sturdier because the shaft is stiffer and the club is shorter. So, you hit it Your chances of hitting a consistent shot are much better than your chances of trying to hold an eight iron with the heel of the grip and thinking that will make you hit the ball farther.
The longer your swing, the longer it takes for problems to arise. By shortening your swing, you limit the time when problems arise and increase your chances of hitting a solid ball.
“I always tell amateurs the best thing to do is hit the ball three-quarters of a way,” he said. “Calm down and get back to normal.”
Next time you find yourself struggling to form a strong connection, listen to Daley’s advice. A shorter swing almost guarantees you’ll hit the ball better than a full swing.
