Ronald D. Moore’s battlestar galactica Remake is a show that’s all about planning. Not only did the showrunner have big plans for his modern sci-fi mythology from the beginning (more or less), but characters like Commander Adama also had to constantly plot and plan to stay one step ahead of the evil Cylons.

But it turns out Adama actor Edward James Olmos isn’t a very good planner in real life, often making spontaneous decisions to bring his on-screen character to life. Unfortunately, this resulted in costly battlestar galactica In the episode “Maelstrom,” the actor accidentally destroyed a $200,000 model.

Adama is angry

for this extremely expensive story battlestar galactica For errors to make sense, you’re going to need some important context. Maelstrom prominently featured a detailed model of an ancient sailing ship that Commander Adama kept in his compound, but this was more like an episode of Star Wars…at least, until the fan-favorite character’s apparent death Heartbreaking moment (don’t worry, she got better…sort of). Starbuck is basically the daughter Adama never had, and the episode ends with an absolutely devastated Adama destroy The model ship burst into tears uncontrollably before collapsing.

Without a doubt, one of the most powerful moments in history battlestar galactica history. This is also the scene where the show makes its most expensive mistake. In 2012, Edward James Olmos revealed a secret to Planet Comicon attendees: that the scene was entirely improvised. In short, Adama destroyed his model ship (unlike Captain Picard destroying his model ship) first contact) was never in the script, and the actor decided to try it right away.

For Omos, this killer improvisation was just another day at the office, and considering how great the scene worked, it’s clear the actor’s instincts for the scene were impeccable. And for all he knows, the model ship he’s destroying was made by the showrunners, so it’s no big deal if he’s as sure about destroying it as Roslin was when he ejected it from the airlock. However, what the actor didn’t know at the time was that the show was renting the model from the museum and that it was worth up to $200,000.

This is expensive battlestar galactica The mistakes are easier to understand when you consider that most of the time, the show used cheap replicas of themselves rather than real models. That said, Olmos didn’t sound all that remorseful when he told the story to attendees. According to the actor, when he learned he had destroyed the one-of-a-kind (and very expensive) model, his reaction was: “What did you do with that in the scene? I was just told that mine [character’s] Your daughter is dead, what else do you expect?

There is a certain logic to his reaction! Producers may consider this an expensive battlestar galactica Wrong, but Olmos saw it as an opportunity to create a memorable moment for his character. This isn’t the first time the actor has performed killer improv, and it certainly won’t be the last. Or, as the Cylons might say, it’s all happened before, and it’ll happen again.
