Secretary of State Marco Rubio was in Munich’s vice presidential speech with CBS host Margaret Brennan.
Rubio joined Brennan’s Face the Nation on Sunday, where he was asked about Vance’s meeting with the German Alternative (AFD) of far-right political groups, And said that the biggest threat to Europe is censorship.
“Why are our allies or anyone who gets annoyed by freedom of speech and people who speak out?” Rubio asked. “After all, we are a democracy.”
Rubio highlighted the countries involved in the Munich security conference, where Vance slammed European officials and accused them of reviewing speeches they disagreed with.
“The Munich Security Conference is largely a meeting of democratic countries and one thing we cherish and value is the ability to speak freely and provide your opinions,” Rubio said.
Rubio believes that no one must agree with Vance’s comment, but his speech is “historic”. The vice president’s actions have aroused sharp criticism.
“I think it’s actually a very historic speech, whether you agree with him or not,” Rubio said. “I think the valid point he made in Europe is that we are worried about the real values we share, with the European bounds.” Values, things like freedom of speech and democracy and our shared history when we won the two world wars.”
Brennan rejected Rubio, believing Vance’s remarks were criticized for his controversial remarks in Germany, a country with a rich history.
“I have to disagree with you,” Rubio said. “Free speech is not used to carry out genocide. Genocide is carried out by an authoritarian Nazi regime, which also happens to be genocide because they hate Jews and ethnic minorities.”
