Rep. Victoria Spartz asks Speaker Johnson to ‘promise’ he won’t sell us into the swamp

As House Speaker Mike Johnson tried to hold on to the gavel, Indiana Republican Rep. Victoria Spaatz demanded “guarantees” that Johnson “won’t sell us into the swamp.”
Johnson, who held the speakership last year, got a boost on Monday after Trump endorsed him to stay in office.
“I understand why President Trump supports Speaker Johnson as much as he supports Speaker Ryan, which is absolutely important. However, we still need assurances that @SpeakerJohnson won’t sell us out to the swamp,” Spartz said in a post on X pointed out.
She added in another tweet: “President Trump can save America only if we have a speaker with courage, vision, planning, and a public commitment to the American people on how to help achieve President Trump’s agenda of draining the swamp.” .
Spartz previously issued a statement on Monday denouncing Congress’s profligate spending and demanding a plan to accomplish President-elect Donald Trump’s agenda, but she said current House Speaker Mike Johnson didn’t see that coming.

“Congress has abdicated its constitutional obligation to the American people to properly oversee the spending of their hard-earned tax dollars,” Spartz declared in a statement. “Our next speaker must demonstrate courageous leadership to get our country back on track before the Titanic hits the iceberg.”
Johnson’s office was contacted by Fox Digital News but had no comment.

Kentucky Rep. Thomas Massie had said he would not vote for Johnson to remain speaker, but he maintained his stance on Monday after Trump endorsed it.

“I respect and support President Trump, but his support for Mike Johnson will play out just as much as his support for Speaker Paul Ryan.
