Long before Jimmy became the 39th President of the United States, he met his future wife, as his mother, at age 3. Lillian CarterHelped give birth to Rosalyn in 1927.
Days before their 75th wedding anniversary in July 2021, Jimmy called his marriage to Rosalyn “the most important thing in my life” in an interview good morning america.
“We’ve survived together for so long because, first of all, we gave each other enough space to do our own thing,” he added. “[But, we still] Share as much as possible. … After 75 years of marriage, our love for each other has always grown deeper. I think this is an extraordinary thing. This doesn’t happen to many couples, but it did happen to us.
Rosalyn passed away in November 2023 surrounded by her loved ones. “Rosalyn has been my equal partner in everything I have accomplished,” Jimmy said in a statement at the time. “She gave me wise guidance and encouragement when I needed it. As long as Rosalyn was alive, I always knew I was loved and supported.
Jimmy died a year later at the age of 100.
