Woman in wheelchair was hit and killed on Melbourne street

MELBOURNE — A woman in a wheelchair was seriously injured Thursday night when she was hit by an SUV as she tried to cross a city street, Melbourne police said.
Police said the 55-year-old Melbourne woman was trying to cross Hibiscus Boulevard at Medical Park Drive about 6.27pm on Thursday when a blue Audi SUV traveling eastbound hit her.
Melbourne police arrived and found the woman on the road with life-threatening injuries. She was treated by paramedics at the scene and transported to Holmes Regional Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.
The SUV’s 53-year-old driver, who is from Palm Bay, has not been charged and has not been further identified. Investigators do not believe alcohol or drugs were involved. The investigation is ongoing.
