Excavations in ancient Pompeii reveal lavish private bath complex

Archaeologists have unearthed a luxurious private bathhouse in Pompeii, highlighting the wealth and grandeur of the ancient Roman city before it was destroyed by Mount Vesuvius in AD 79, the website said on Friday.
Featuring hot, conservatory and cold rooms, the baths can accommodate up to 30 guests, allowing them to relax before heading to the adjoining black-walled ballroom, decorated with scenes from Greek mythology.

The ride is housed in a majestic residence that was uncovered during excavations over the past two years, revealing how the wealthy city lived before Mount Vesuvius buried it under a thick, choking ash of many aspects of social life.
A central courtyard with a large pool adds to the splendor of the house, whose owner is believed to have been a member of Pompeii’s elite during its final years.
Gabriel Zuchtriegel, director of Pompeii Archaeological Park, said: “This discovery highlights that Roman houses were more than just private residences, they were arenas for public life and self-promotion.”

Zuttrigel said the layout was reminiscent of scenes from the Roman novel The Satyricon, in which banquets and baths were central to displays of wealth and status.
The complex is decorated with frescoes, drawing inspiration from Greek culture and emphasizing themes of leisure and erudition.
“Homeowners tried to create a spectacle by transforming their homes into Greek-style palaces and gymnasiums,” Zuchtrigel said.
