Officials postpone Sugar Bowl game after apparent terror attack on Bourbon Street

The 2025 Sugar Bowl in New Orleans was postponed hours before tipoff on Wednesday after an incident that left at least 10 people dead and dozens injured was being investigated by federal officials as an act of terrorism.

Allstate Sugar Bowl CEO Jeff Hundley spoke at a press conference with local and federal officials Wednesday afternoon to confirm that the College Football Playoff quarterfinal game between Georgia and Notre Dame will be postponed 24 hours.

“We wish we weren’t here today for that reason. The Sugar Bowl Committee has a 90-year history and has been a good corporate citizen of the city of New Orleans, which is why this tragedy is as hurtful to us as it is to anyone right now. Our Our condolences, thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and their families as we work together to resolve this issue.

“All parties agree that it is in everyone’s best interest as well as public safety that we postpone the game for 24 hours.

“There will be more details in the next few hours, but for now, this is our plan as we move forward and play the game. [tomorrow.]”

The Superdome, home to the New Orleans Saints, was reportedly initially placed on lockdown for a security scan, with personnel in the stadium’s office told not to come to the site until further notice.

A source told The Associated Press that the directive includes officials from the Sugar Bowl and Sun Belt Conference.

According to a statement from the FBI, at about 3:15 a.m. local time, a man driving a Ford pickup truck rammed into a crowd of people on Bourbon Street. The suspect, 42-year-old Shamsud-Din Jabbar, exchanged gunfire with local law enforcement and was pronounced dead at the scene.

This apparent terrorist attack has left at least 10 people dead and 35 injured.

The FBI is also working to determine “the suspect’s potential ties and ties to the terrorist organization” after an Islamic State flag was found on the truck. Weapons and potential improvised explosive devices were found in the suspect’s car, and other potential improvised explosive devices were found in the French Quarter.

The tragedy in New Orleans comes as thousands of fans descend on the historic city ahead of Wednesday night’s Sugar Bowl game.

The Superdome is just a mile from the site of Wednesday morning’s deadly attack.

Georgia and Notre Dame arrived in New Orleans on Sunday and reportedly stayed at a hotel just blocks from the crime scene. Both schools reportedly implemented “shelter in place” for their teams.
