Nova Scotia police warn about scams targeting seniors

Halifax Regional Police are warning about scams targeting seniors after a number of incidents.

In a news release issued Friday, HRP urged people to be vigilant for any calls or emails asking for money and said they are seeking help identifying suspects in multiple scams in the Halifax area.

In each of the reported incidents, victims received phone calls pretending to be family members who had been arrested and needed bail.

They were then turned over to another person who claimed to be involved in the legal system and told they needed to pay to get their relative out of jail.

“In all of the recent incidents, the suspects arranged to travel to the victim’s residence or gather at a public location to collect the money in person,” HRP wrote.

Police say anyone who receives such a call should hang up and not provide any financial or personal information.

HRP also released a photo of the suspect, describing him as being between 30 and 40 years old and wearing all black, including a black medical mask and glasses. He has short black hair that appears to be shaved or partially faded at the sides.

He may also be driving a white SUV.

The Truro Police Department also shared warnings of similar scams on Facebook. The RCMP said they have received reports of scams from Stratton, Pictou, Colchester County and Halifax regional municipalities.

In a similar scam reported in 2023, a Nova Scotia couple lost $22,000 in a “grandparent scam.”

Individuals who believe they have been scammed are encouraged to contact police.
