Walt Disney cuts diversity categories from executing compensation plans

Walt Disney replaced diversity and inclusion as an independent indicator of compensation while maintaining enforcement, after conservative politicians criticized the entertainment group for pushing for a “wake up” agenda.
In an internal memo sent on Tuesday, the company said it was updating “how our values are embedded in our leader compensation plan.” Add the new metric “Talent Strategy” to its execution compensation plan to replace the “Diverency and Inclusion” category, although it says “significant concepts” in the old plan will remain in place. Its other performance categories, “Storytelling and Creativity” and “System”, have not changed.
Disney is also removing suggestions that it plays before some old movies, such as Dumbo and Peter PanOne person familiar with the matter said that the audience was warned to “including negative descriptions and/or abuse of ethnic or culture.” However, these consultations will move to the box along with other details about the film.
The moves were first reported by Axios, following support from other big corporations since Donald Trump was elected president in November. Meta, McDonald’s and Target are the groups that scrap their diversity and inclusion programs. Goldman Sachs abandoned its diversity rules on the IPO on Tuesday.
Disney has a huge and positive foundation for LGBT+ employees, positioning it as a revision rather than a wholesale scrap DEI policy. It promises to continue the process of recruiting “accessible” and vows to “deliberately embrace the culture to which everyone belongs.”
In 2022, Disney was under blighted attacks for responding to Florida law that restricts discussions about sexual or gender identity in elementary schools, critics tagged the proposal as “Don’t say gay.”
Disney’s LGBT+ employees initially criticized the company, which operates huge resorts and amusement parks in Florida because they did not object to the bill. But when the group finally opposed the proposal, the state’s Governor Ron DeSantis took action to support Disney’s 50-year-old’s ability to operate property around its theme parks. The promotion surrounding the episode has made the company the target of conservative activists seeking to backfire on the DEI program.
Since returning to the company in November 2022, Disney CEO Bob Iger has tried to curb the impression that the company is pushing for a political or social agenda.
“What I really try to do is go back to our roots, and remember that we have to be entertained first. It has nothing to do with the information,” Iger said at the 2023 conference.
Disney, he said, “can’t see their first goal. .. It would be great if you can inject it into a positive message that makes a good impact on the world. But that shouldn’t be the goal.”
Opposition campaigners and Republican politicians, including Trump, attacked at Disney for their queer and minority roles in the movie. The president told supporters in December that former Marvel chairman Ike Perlmutter “leaned Disney because he woke up.”
