Nicole Kidman cries on stage as she honors late mother with award at Palm Springs Film Festival

Nicole Kidman burst into tears as she presented the International Star Award to her late mother, Janelle Ann Kidman, on stage at the Palm Springs Film Festival.

The 57-year-old actress was presented with the award by friend Jamie Lee Curtis at the 36th annual International Film Awards on Friday.

In a video shared on social media, Kidman got emotional during her acceptance speech, telling viewers she was “still grieving” Jenelle’s death in early September 2024. She won the best actress award for her performance in “Babygirl” but missed the ceremony to be with her family.

“I want to give… because I didn’t get to do that at the Venice Film Festival,” Kidman said through tears. “I got to Venice and she was gone.”

The Australian recalled asking “Baby Girl” director Halina Raine to accept the award on her behalf in Venice.

“But now that I’m on stage, I’m back here,” Kidman said, as the audience burst into applause.

“Thank you for giving me the opportunity to say, ‘This is for my mom,'” she added, wiping away tears as Curtis reached for her hand.

“My whole career has been for my mom and dad, and they’re not here right now,” Kidman said. “But I still want to keep working and contributing to the world because I love what I do. I love you all. I’m so grateful to be a part of the film community.

“I’m sorry I cried. I didn’t want to do that, but I feel my mom now. This is for you, mom.”

Kidman’s father, Anthony Kidman, died in 2014.

While accepting Kidman’s award in Venice, Wren shared a statement from the “Moulin Rouge” star in which she announced her mother’s death.

“Thank you for giving me the opportunity to say, ‘This is for my mom.'”

“Shortly after arriving in Venice, I learned that my beautiful, brave mother, Janelle Ann Kidman, had just passed away,” Kidman reportedly said in a statement. Associated Press. “I’m shocked that I have to go back to my family, but this award is for her. She shaped me and made me who I am.”

A representative for Kidman later told Fox News Digital that “the family is heartbroken and requests privacy at this time.”

Kidman also missed the premiere of “Baby Girl” at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 10.

On September 12, Kidman and her sister Antonia Kidman expressed their gratitude for the support they have received as they cope with their mother’s death.

“My sister and I and our family want to thank you for the love and kindness you have shown us this week,” they wrote in a joint Instagram post.

“Every message we receive from those who love and admire our mother means so much to us more than we can express. Thank you to our entire family for respecting our privacy as we look out for each other. “

The actress received critical acclaim for her performance in the erotic thriller “Baby Girl,” starring Antonio Banderas and Harris Dickinson. Kidman also received a nomination for Best Actress at the Golden Globes, which aired Sunday night.

Kidman stars in the second season of Taylor Sheridan’s Paramount+ series Lioness, which premiered in October. She will next be seen in the upcoming Amazon Prime Video show Scarpetta, based on Patricia Cornwell’s book series of the same name.

Curtis will play Kidman’s sister in “Scarpetta,” and both actresses serve as executive producers on the project.

At the Oct. 23 premiere of Lioness, Kidman reflected on how she feels about her latest wave of career success.

“I wish my mom was here,” she told The Hollywood Reporter . “That’s one thing I have to say. Work is all well and good, but I wish my mom was here.

“It’s hard,” she added. “It’s a tough road. I’m going to persevere.”
