NHL star fined $100,000 for violating CBA training protocols over Christmas break

“This team activity violates Section 16.5(b) of the collective bargaining agreement between the NHL and the NHL Players Association,” the announcement reads.

According to the agreement, “any club shall not require players to agree to train on these days for any reason” on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and December 26, unless the game is held on the 26th.

Head coach Pete DeBoer told reporters before the game that the team “had a choice, and certainly the young guys showed up in the choice, like they should.”

Game travel is also prohibited during league-mandated breaks. The fine will be donated to the NHL Foundation.
