New York City has been grappling with violent crime on its streets and on public transportation, and an influx of homeless illegal immigrants has only exacerbated the problem. Mayor Eric Adams has repeatedly expressed frustration with the federal government and believes the city lacks the resources to care for them.

According to a City Hall report, an estimated 220,000 immigrants have arrived in the city since April 2022, with more than 58,000 of them currently being cared for by New York City taxpayers.
