Navy denies Oklahoma State victory in Armed Forces Bowl after stopping final two-point conversion

Navy defeated Oklahoma State 21-20 in the Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl on Friday.

With less than 10 seconds left in the fourth quarter, Oklahoma quarterback Michael Hawkins Jr. connected with tight end Jake Roberts for a 10-yard touchdown. Hoosiers head coach Brent Venables decided to go for the win.

Venables’ offense brought the score to 20-21, but Navy’s defense shut the door.

Hawkins was in shotgun and was immediately overwhelmed by the Midshipmen defenders in the backfield, ultimately sealing the game with a sack on the two-point conversion attempt.

Oklahoma State got off to a hot start, with running back Gavin Sawchuk running for a 21-yard touchdown and wide receiver Zion Kearney catching a 56-yard touchdown pass for the first time. The quarter ended 14-0.

Starting in the second quarter, the Midshipmen scored 21 points.

Navy back Alex Tecza then scored an 11-yard touchdown run for Navy, cutting the Sooners’ lead to 14-7.

In the third quarter, quarterback Blake Horvath reeled off the longest run in Navy history.

Horvath faked a catch, burst into the open field and took off 95 yards for a touchdown. He was initially ruled a touchdown because he was tackled near the goal line, but replay ruled it a touchdown.

With 3:49 left in the third quarter, Horace’s 95-yard rush tied the game at 14.

The Midshipmen’s previous record was set in the Roger Staubach era, when Johnny Thay’s 93-yard touchdown run against Duke in 1963.

Horvath then found the end zone again and scored from 6 yards out to give Navy a 21-14 lead.

Horvat completed 7 of 12 passing attempts for 92 yards while rushing 18 times for 155 yards and two touchdowns.

Teza rushed 15 times for 43 yards and a touchdown in the victory.

Hawkins played well in this loss, completing 28 of 43 passes for 247 yards and 2 touchdowns, while rushing 17 times for 61 yards.

Sawchuk rushed 13 times for 67 yards and a touchdown.

With the loss, Oklahoma finished the season with a 6-7 record.

Navy finished the season with a 10-3 record.
