Despite not being able to attend (or perform at) the Academy of Country Music Awards on April 18, 2021 due to his COVID-19 diagnosis, Luke Bryan took home the night’s biggest prize: Entertainer of the Year. Bryan, whose win marked the third time he took home the award, was super appreciative and thankful for the trophy.
“Oh my god. Y’all got me. I’m amazingly surprised,” a genuinely happy Bryan said in his speech, per People, which he made from L.A. “What an honor.”
Bryan beat out fellow country singers Chris Stapleton, Luke Combs, Thomas Rhett, and Eric Church for the top award. And Twitter users did not hold back their true feelings, immediately expressing their anger about the situation. But it’s not Luke Bryan in particular: As it turns out, any of the nominees winning the award would have sparked the same exact outrage. Get all of the details below.
The real reason fans were enraged by the Entertainer of the Year award
With zero women nominated for Entertainer of the Year at the 2021 ACMs — despite killer performances from Female Artist of the Year Maren Morris, host Mickey Guyton, Miranda Lambert, Carrie Underwood, Kelsea Ballerini, and many more — viewers were pissed, and understandably so. One country fan even shared that it “genuinely ruined the entire award show for me.”
“I dont get how anyone could listen to @carrieunderwood or @mirandalambert tonight and not think they should have entertainer of the year nom,” wrote a second viewer. “No women nominated ACMs??! Really…”
“ACM’s top award for entertainer of the year had 5 nominees, ALL male. So this means no Women in country music were good enough to at least be nominated in 2020?! Not even on a year nobody toured?? #ACMAwards #MachoCountry,” another tweeted.
“Why were there no women up for Entertainer of the year? The ladies can sing circles around those guys. COME ON MAN!!!!” responded a fourth fan.
While the 2021 ACMs made inclusion a big theme of the night, it looks like there is still some more work to do.
