Shakira’s life explored – sex bans, sea lion attacks and ‘porno’ shows

Shakira has spent her lifetime gracing the Earth as one of the most successful Spanish singers of our time.

Her beautiful voice has travelled all over the world as she sings in both English and Spanish.

She's also gone on to use her wealth to be a philanthropist and give back to solve problems of all kinds, as well as enjoying the finer things life has to offer.

Her wit and charm has won her millions of fans and, while doing all of the above, Shakira has always managed to maintain an air of mystery surrounding her.

Today (February 2) the bombshell turns 44 and in honour of her birthday, here are some facts and events from the mother-of-two's life.

Presidential marriage

One fascinating fact about Shakira is that she used to be engaged to Antonio de la Rua.

At the time, he was the son of the President of Argentina.

The pair were together for 11 years but split in August 2010.

Shakira announced the break-up at the time on her official website by releasing a written statement from both her and her former lover.

According to Billboard at the time, the letter read: "Since August 2010, we made a mutual decision to take time apart from our romantic relationship.

"Throughout this time we have continued to work together hand in hand, have remained close and have kept the details absolutely private until now.

"We view this period of separation as temporary and as a time of individual growth as we continue to be partners in our business and professional lives."

Not longer after, the pair confirmed they had broken up and Shakira has since married someone else.

In 2010, Shakira entered a committed relationship with Gerard Piqué, who is a professional FIFA soccer player from Spain.

He is 10 years younger than her and, bizarrely enough, both of their birthdays are on February 2.

The pair went on to have a beautiful love story and proved age is just a number in mature relationships.

They have now been together for 11 years and frequently give fans a peek into the lives they share wth their children, sons Milan, six, and Sasha, four, on their official Instagram accounts to their millions of fans.

Shakira and Gerald met on the music video for her hit song Waka Waka, as it was the theme song for the FIFA World Cup that year.

Sex bans

  • Susanna Reid dubbed 'visually perfect' from shapely legs to killer cheekbones

The pair have previously recalled how, while they were filming the Waka Waka music video together, Gerard told Shakira he'd win the cup to be able to see her again.

He said to her at the time: "I’m going to win the World Cup just so I can see you again at Finals."

And sure enough, he did.

Ironically, years later during the 2014 World Cup, the couple was banned from having sex, because it’s considered a distraction for the athletes.

Brother tragically killed

When Shakira was just two years old, an older half-brother was killed in a motorcycle accident.

Six years later, at the age of eight, Shakira wrote her first song, titled Tus Gafas Oscuras/Your Dark Glasses, which was inspired by her father, who for years wore dark glasses to hide his grief.

In 2006, Shakira's dad William spoke of the grief on the TV music channel VH1, which presented a documentary about the life of Shakira Isabel Mebarack Ripoll.

He revealed that he and his daughter had tragically lost their brother and son, Tonino.

William recalled how Shakira wrote the song Tus Gafas Oscuras when she was just nine years old.

The father told the story of how Tonino died when he was just 19 after being hit by a motorcycle.

William said during the documentary: "My son died at the age of 19, when Shakira was two years old.

"One day, Shakira said to me: 'Papa, I want you to hear this song, the name is Your Dark Glasses.'

"From the moment I lost my eldest son, I hid the pain behind a pair of glasses and she formed a connection between that and the glasses I used."

Shocking cement attack

Shakira has over 70million people following her on Instagram and even though she has so many fans, apparently not everyone adores her.

One time, a random angry person tried to attack her with a bag of cement.

Thankfully, the pop star was not hurt.

The incident happened during a promotional appearance at a Sydney shopping centre in May 2002 when a bag of cement dust was thrown at Shakira.

Shakira was quickly rushed off stage and the dust did not reach her during her performance at the Westfield shopping centre in the southern Sydney suburb of Hurstville.

Sadly ambulance officials confirmed at the time that a number of the 2,500 fans gathered to watch were coated in dust and suffered breathing difficulties.

One teen girl was treated for an asthma attack, ambulance officials confirmed.

Police arrested a 19-year-old man, who's identity was never revealed by authorities, who was later charged with offensive behaviour, assaulting police and resisting arrest.

'Porno' show

In 2020, Shakira and JLo's undeniably sexy performance during the Super Bowl halftime show received over 1,300 complaints to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).

As most of American sat down to watch the Kansas City Chiefs battle the San Francisco 49ers, halftime came and that's when the real show began.

The FCC received the whopping amount of complaints from those who had something negative to say about the empowering and smoking hot performance.

Shakira and JLo were compared to a "porno show" at the time as they grinded on poles, twerked all over the stage, belly danced and made sexually suggestive gestures.

Some viewers argued the showing encouraged sex trafficking, while others felt their children were "exposed to a porno show".

At the time, one viewer complained on social media: "This is not appropriate family entertainment as the Super Bowl advertises. It was appalling! And then having young girls join the spectacle…"

Another voiced: "I am very offended by the performance of porn on a supposed family occasion. I will be boycotting the Super Bowl and especially the vulgar half time shows that have progressively gotten worse through the years."

Violent sea lion

In 2012, Shakira's brother saved her from a violent sea lion which was trying to bite her.

The incident happened as she tried to take photos of the animal and it mistook her phone for a fish.

Shakira had been with a tour group and climbed down onto rocks to get closer to the animal when it jumped out of the water and tried to bite her.

The star said her brother Tony saved her life by jumping in front of her and helping her get away from the animal.

At the time, Shakira told the story on her official Facebook page.

She wrote: "Special Report: Attacked by a Sea Lion.

"Suddenly, one of them jumped out of the water so fast and impetuously that it got about one foot away from me, looked me in the eye, roared in fury and tried to bite me.

"Everyone there screamed, including me. I was paralysed by fear and couldn't move, I just kept eye contact with it while my brother 'Super Tony' jumped over me and literally saved my life, taking me away from the beast."

She added: "We both got our hands and legs scratched by the rocks while trying to protect ourselves.

"I believe what happened is that it confused the shiny reflection of the Blackberry I was taking these pics with, with some sort of fish. It probably thought I was teasing it with food and then taking it away from it."
