Police said at least 39 people were injured when a 24-year-old Afghanistan drove his car into a demonstration organized by the Verdi Union on Thursday.
The driver is in custody and the investigation continues.

Verdi boss Frank Werneke expressed deep shock at the death of his mother and daughter. He said the woman was a colleague who attended the demonstration with her children. “The grief of the suffering of the victims of Munich’s attack is almost immeasurable,” he said.
Lord Munich mayor Dieter Reiter said the woman was a municipal employee. “When she went out to the streets to gain union rights, she and her daughter were murdered. Pain cannot be spoken.”
Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Söder took to X and said: “All of this has done a lot of harm and it’s meaningless. The whole of Bavaria is mourning.”
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz visited the crime scene, laid a rose and demanded the most severe punishment for the attacker.
“Things like this shouldn’t happen,” Scholz said. “Anyone who does this must expect the most severe punishment.”
He said anyone without a right to residency must leave the country at the end of the judgment.
Scholz also thanks rescuers and emergency services.
“We have to stand together now and make sure our country is united,” he added.
The investigation continues
Investigators currently believe the crime has an Islamic background. The driver was detained.
Gabriele Tilmann, chief prosecutor of Munich’s fight against extremism and terrorism (ZET), said the suspect was an Afghan citizen who intended to speed up the march during the inquiry.
She quoted police testimony that the driver shouted “Alahu Akba” after the attack – Arabic is “God is the greatest”, which is evidence of Islamic motives.
The federal prosecutor’s office took over the investigation Friday night. “People suspect that crime is religiously motivated and should be understood as an attack on the basic order of liberal democracy in Germany,” the authorities said.
The man legally lived in Germany last time. He is said to have lied to his escape story, according to a court ruling on his asylum application from October 2020. But the Munich market issued a tolerant decision in 2021 and issued a residence permit to the person.
