Michigan Democratic Governor Whitmer directly attracts young people after a sharp election shift
Lansing, Michigan (AP) – Gretchen Whitmer, a Democratic Governor of Michigan, appealed directly to young people who, in a recent speech, continued to call on every major political party to work in the aisle.
Whitmer gave a speech a few days after sitting next to Donald Trump at a White House dinner and reiterated her hopes of finding common ground with him. As a potential presidential candidate for 2028, whose national visibility is based on advocacy for women’s rights, Whitmer stressed that her message is “a goal for all young people, especially for our young men.”
“The last thing any of us wants is a generation of young people lag behind their fathers and grandfathers,” Whitmer said.

Young people waved sharply for Trump in the November election. A nationwide survey of more than 120,000 voters, he received a larger share of black and Latino voters than in 2020, most notably among men under the age of 45. Many respondents listed Trump’s attitude towards the economy and job opportunities.
Whitmer nodded, women have surpassed men in recent years, including educational achievements and home purchases. She said there are many women who are participating in double the state program for a non-learning college community college.
“What is the right message to try to bring a man back to the Democratic Party,” Republican House Speaker Matt Hall said after Whitmer’s speech.
“The remarks are great, but the records have to match that,” Hall said.
Whitmer promises to sign an executive order to promote admission education and skills training programs for young men.
Whitmer, one of the 12 female governors, is arguably the most famous Whitmer, who established national popularity for women’s rights. She helped pass a voting measure in 2022 that codified reproductive rights in the state and is one of the country’s leading advocates for abortion rights.
“I see your resilience for the women who have stacked their decks on her for decades, and I will never give up on my commitment to equal opportunity and dignity for all,” she said.
The address is a secondary persistent state of the second governor’s national speech due to term limits. Speech is the annual platform for governors to promote policy.
In his last two years as governor, Whitmer faced a split legislature after flipping Republicans over the state House. She has been saying she wants to work with Trump and Republicans in Michigan and signed a bipartisan package to change the state’s minimum wage requirement last week.
Whitmer issued a similar tone on Wednesday.
“My Polaris has always been a collaborative one,” she said.
However, not all Democrats in all countries agree with this approach.
“I’m worried about everything we see in the presidency right now,” Michigan Democratic Attorney General Dana Nessel told the Associated Press, criticizing Whitmer for the tone he took with the president.
Nessel is one of many Democratic lawyers who have been beating the Trump administration and Elon Musk in lawsuits and accusing many unconstitutional actions. She called negotiations with the president a “fool.”
Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson said free information about the governor’s cooperation, but hopes Whitmer and other governors can address some of Trump’s moves.
“There are also a lot of people who are anxious and afraid because of the people they love, appearance or where they come from,” she said. “So we have to talk about the power born from Michigan because it keeps everyone safe and everyone protected.”
In a speech Wednesday, Whitmer introduced legislation to limit cell phone use in schools and impose taxes. Republicans say they support legislation that limits the use of mobile phones in schools, while disapproving Whitmer’s tax vapes plan.
