McIlroy’s speed secrets and Hatton “looks like a farmer”: Weekend 9

It’s 12:30 a.m. on a Friday in January and I’m watching a 2014 baseball game.
My wife even double checked.
“It’s 12:30 in the morning in January and you’re watching a 2014 baseball game?”
I am.
“Yuke?”
Yu Ke.
She walked away and I continued to watch. Or listen. To Uk. Just like I did in ’87, 620am, Easter Sunday, Deer and Sveum listened in depth, and 9-year-old me was listening at my kitchen table, 3 miles from Metal County Stadium. I heard it in ’92, but this time on the way home from the yard, driving up to Rockin Robin in a dark brown station wagon I bought from Bud Selig’s Buick dealership. 3,000 that night. On Thursday afternoon, after the Milwaukee Brewers were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs, I listened to the last few words of Uecker’s last season. Those are hurt. He said the loss was painful. Indeed. Another year, another wait for next year. However, the team’s longtime radio voice had been battling cancer, and on Thursday, we learned he had passed away.
If you’re not familiar, Uecker used to have his hand in everything in a regular guy way. Miller Wright Advocate. Carson guest. Situation comedy and movie star. He was also known as “Mr. Baseball,” which you know is ironic since he played six seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB), mostly underwhelming — though no one was more so than Uecker himself. I can accept the irony. He leaned in. No one stabs Ueke more easily than Ueke, which makes the Milwaukee native a bit like a guy on a bar stool — one when he grabs the broadcast play-by-play microphone at a Brewers game The Perfect Choice’ Season 1, 1971, and have been talked about ever since. About the team. About himself. About anything. After all, baseball, like golf, has inherent disparities.
By the way, golf. Let’s get down to business. There are several.
First of all, welcome! Think of this as a place to stay warm on the weekends. We will have ideas. We will have tips. We will have tweets. But there are only nine in total, although sometimes there may be more and sometimes there may be less. As for who I am, the first few paragraphs above do the job. Milwaukee Kid. Grew up across the street from the bar. Lovely wife. Sports Observer. Golf typist.
Another person who has heard the cries of losing interest in the pro game wonders if any pro players have seen how Ueke does it. Maybe golf needs a Mr. Golf. There is also a golf lady. Trevino is one of them. Who else?
Rest in peace, Uke. Next up are our other eight.
A takeaway from this week and the coming weeks
2. Where do we stand on TGL?
In a very unscientific scan, acceptance was good among both paid and unpaid reviewers in the first week. Lots of bells and whistles, but not enough hammer. The pace is fast, although a bit slow towards the end. This is different. At least, watch some golf on a Monday or Tuesday night.

But then came week two.
And the technology doesn’t seem to work for people. Play. Things were so casual. Does anyone care if they win? Or lost? Posting a comment. Should we care about this?
This means we should wait. Give it time. Maybe wait until week seven at the end of next month. Things should be more settled. We will also have three games, two on Monday and one on Tuesday. How will the league keep us watching this?
Speaking of…
3. What does my now 17-year-old reporter think of week two? During the first week, I (sort of) forced my golf-loving teenage nephew to watch and then talk to him because he was exactly the audience TGL was trying to attract.
But he wasn’t watching this week. Sort of like.
He didn’t watch ESPN’s coverage. But on YouTube, he did see Good Good in action inside the TGL dome.
This says something.

4. What am I reading (Apart from My colleague’s thoughtful prose)? There are two articles worth clicking on.
here, golf digest Luke Kerr-Dineen writes about why pros airlift greens during TGL events – and the reason isn’t technical. kind of. LKD, like anyone, asks “why”.
For Tiger Woods’ new golf league to thrive, TGL must address two things

5. here, wall street journal Jason Gay takes his turn reviewing TGL. Is this gold:
“Golf reimagined. Such is TGL’s promise that it should warrant a motto: any time you see ‘__________ reimagined,’ investment firms have joined the conversation.
This is also great:
“The evening kicked off with the ultimate display of sports enthusiasm: a dramatic exit. The unassuming men accustomed to quietly stepping out of game limousines entered the bustling SoFi Center like gladiators in pressed pants. Woods, of course, got the biggest ovation on Tuesday, walking out last to a rumbling version of “Survivor’s “Eye of the Tiger,” a song that’s been around long enough to qualify for most restaurants in South Florida. 7. Is European Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald bracing himself for potential thugs at Bethpage Black Stadium in New York? Apparently so. Tommy Fleetwood referred to last week’s Team Cup effort during his press conference ahead of this week’s Hero Dubai Desert Classic.
“Look, you can’t replicate the Ryder Cup, that’s for sure,” he said. “But you can definitely do your best and create different environments that will help us really need to deal with this, and I thought Luke did a great job, if you will, on some of the challenges that we’re going to face. Excellent. The team is away for the Ryder Cup in September and I think it’s more about being aware and trying to develop certain skills to help you best handle those situations and then be able to practice.
“So you can’t replicate the situation on the first tee of the Ryder Cup or the different scenes there. But you can definitely create little situations if you want to that will help you process what you need to do at the time, and I think last week Just a good example, I’ve you know, definitely haven’t done anything like this before and I think that can only help.
Bunkered’s Ben Parsons provided more details, and you can find his story here. These paragraphs are like this:
“‘They changed things with distraction tactics because we were going to New York,’ Jordan Smith, a member of the British and Irish team, told bunkered.co.uk at the Dubai Desert Classic.

“He said to Tyrell Hatton that because of his beard, he looked like a born-again Amish farmer. He tried to stop everyone and said you’re going to put it in the water and you’re going to hit *** .

8. New York Jets’ Soos Gardner gave away golf clubs earlier this week. story from golf digest Alex Myers saw Gardner’s Instagram Story, where he wrote the post, and here’s a selection of footage from the club:
“Don’t ask me why I have so many clubs. Just help me get rid of them. At one point last offseason, I thought it was the clubs that made you play better. Not the other way around, haha.
