I am in the obese category and couldn’t stop eating in lockdown. I meant to exercise at home but failed miserably.
I tried running the other day and put on some shorts but they were too small.
I asked Mum whether she’d recommend a different brand, as she’s 45 and “the cycling queen”. She said: “Keep running as you’re doing and you’ll soon fit into them.”
I know I’m overweight but her comments get me down.

DEIDRE SAYS: Starting any conversation with “I” rather than “You” – such as, “I feel upset that” or, “I feel disappointed that” – shows you are owning those emotions rather than blaming your mum.
Explain that you know she is worried about you but suggest that she supports you by exercising with you.
Or perhaps she will encourage you to cycle with her? Actions speak louder than words, after all.
My support pack on losing weight will help you when you are ready to make some lifestyle changes.
