DEAR DEIDRE: MY estranged husband is in denial that we are going through a divorce.
I’m 38 and he is 37. He is fighting every step of the way.
He keeps saying he hasn’t received the papers, yet I know he has.
He doesn’t see our children regularly but he thinks it’s OK to turn up yelling.
I’ve twice called the police about his verbal abuse and for making the children cry.
We co-own the house, so I don’t feel I have rights over it.
How come I could have him arrested over his abuse yet I can’t seem to get this divorce through?

DEIDRE SAYS: You have reached a stalemate.
It could be time to consider mediation.
Take a look at familymediationcouncil.org.uk.
If you are on low income and entitled to legal aid, you might be able to get mediation for free.
If you still can’t agree after mediation, you will probably need to resort to the legal process.
Consider a collaborative divorce whereby both parties and their solicitors commit to work together on the split.
Organise set times for him to see your children.
Explain that his shouting upsets everyone and if he does it again, you will close the door.
My support pack Standing Up For Yourself teaches assertiveness.
