MORE than half of over-65s now shop online, official figures reveal.
Some 54 per cent bought goods or services off the internet this year — the first time more than half have done so.
Traditionally, those aged 65 and over are the age group least likely to shop online.
A total of 82 per cent of all adults bought goods or services online this year, an increase of five per cent on 2018. The figures, from household and individual internet use, show 87 per cent of all adults use the internet daily or almost every day.
The Office for National Statistics research also reveals 93 per cent of households now have access to the internet.
That is three per cent up on last year and a 23 per cent rise in the past decade.
Of the 7% of households without internet access, nearly two-thirds said they felt they did not need it.
And 33% cited privacy and security concerns as one of the reasons they did not need access.
The online shopping boom coincides with new figures from the British Retail Consortium that show the number of empty shops in town centres has reached its highest level since 2015.
