As Britain’s ruling monarch, it’s no surprise that the Queen has presented members of her family with some lavish gifts over the years.

From handing out titles to passing down tiaras, she’s renowned for being extremely generous when it comes to giving gifts, and her children and grandchildren have been treated to some amazing presents by her.

In fact, Prince William and Kate Middleton’s beloved family home, Anmer Hall, was a gift from the Queen following the couple’s wedding in 2011.

Intimate gift-giving occasions, such as Christmas at Sandringham, are much more relaxed – the family prefer to buy funny presents rather than extravagant ones (apparently Kate Middleton bought Prince Harry a grow-your-own girlfriend!).

But that isn’t to say the Queen’s the only one who splashes out.

Here are five of the most epic presents bought by members of the Royal Family.

Kate (and her family) bought James Middleton a colony of bees

James Middleton is known for his love of dogs, but it seems that he has a love of bees too. In 2020, he revealed that for his 24th birthday in 2011, his family had surprised him with the gift of a bee colony, consisting of 1,000 Buckfast bees.

It appears the present hasn’t gone to waste, as James reports now having almost half a million bees spread across eight hives at the Middleton family home.

Prince William was reportedly surprised with a £25,000 portrait by Kate on his 30th birthday

With a degree in History of Art, The Duchess of Cambridge’s gift to Prince William for his 30th birthday shows that she knows a thing or two about paintings.

While Prince William was away on a tour of duty in The Falklands, Kate sat down for her first royal portrait and was painted by Welsh-born artist Nicky Philipps.

Costing around £25,000, the painting was paid for by the Prince of Wales and was reportedly presented to William on his official birthday.

Prince Harry bought Prince Louis an £8,000 copy of Winnie The Pooh for his Christening

In honour of his memories of being read to by his mother, Princess Diana, Prince Harry bought Prince Louis a first edition of Winnie-The-Pooh in order to start a library for his nephew. Printed in 1926 and being one of 30,000, the book set Harry back a huge £8,000.

According to sources close to the Prince, the AA Milne book wasn’t his first title of choice, with the Prince eventually deciding that his preferred gift of Lewis Carroll’s Through The Looking Glass was not suitable as a first present.

Prince Charles bought Kate a £60,000 jewellery set

When Kate Middleton and Prince William got married in 2011, Prince Charles welcomed his daughter-in-law into the family by gifting her a three-piece art deco jewellery set, costing an estimated £60,000.

Featuring a white and yellow diamond bracelet, earrings and ring, Kate has been seen wearing the pieces on multiple occasions.

Prince Charles bought Princess Diana her beloved car

Alongside the infamous sapphire ring, to mark Prince Charles’ engagement to Diana, he gifted his wife-to-be a silver 1.6 litre Ford Escort car.

The Prince gave Diana the car two months before their marriage at St Paul’s Cathedral in 1981, with the Princess being pictured using it to drive to see him compete in his polo matches.

Following Prince William’s birth however, Diana stopped driving the car. It was auctioned off earlier this year for over £52,000.
