A Tesla Cybertruck containing gasoline and camp fuel containers, as well as a large pyrotechnic mortar, exploded in front of the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas, killing one person and injuring seven others, authorities said.

Las Vegas Sheriff Kevin McMahill said at a news conference Wednesday that investigators know who rented the Cybertruck, which was purchased in Colorado, but are not 100 percent aware of the situation. In the case of certainty, they are not prepared to identify the person.

McMahill also said investigators were able to track the truck through a Tesla charging station. License plate readers in Las Vegas first detected the car around 7:30 a.m., and McMahill said the car drove up and down the Strip before pulling into the Trump Hotel Valet parking area.

The sergeant added that within 15 to 20 seconds of arriving at the hotel, the vehicle exploded.

During the news conference, the sheriff showed video of the truck’s bed, which showed it was filled with gasoline cans, camp fuel cans and large pyrotechnic mortars.

But the sheriff also pointed out the exterior of the truck and how it remained intact after the explosion.

“The fact that this was a Cybertruck really limited the damage that occurred inside the valet because most of the explosion was propagated up through the truck,” McMahill said. “In fact, if you look at that video , you’ll notice that the front glass door of the Trump Hotel wasn’t even broken by the explosion.”

Although the explosion did not damage the glass door, seven people suffered minor injuries and were taken to a nearby hospital.

As for all guests at the hotel, they have been accommodated by another hotel as the investigation into the bombing continues.

Like McMahill, Acting FBI Special Agent in Charge Jeremy Schwartz in Las Vegas declined to identify the people in the car, saying: “Our first goal is to make sure we can properly identify them. The objects involved in the incident.

The second goal is to determine whether the explosion was an act of terrorism, which is being investigated by the Joint Terrorism Task Force, Schwartz said.

Agents said the task force is made up of law enforcement officials from the area.

“We don’t do anything together, and we don’t do anything alone without our partners making sure we’re on the same page,” Schwartz said. “We’ve learned from our past mistakes and we won’t do it again Done.”

The Cybertruck explosion is the second suspected fatal incident in a major city since early 2025.

A man later identified as Shamsud Din Jabbar drove a pickup truck into a crowd of people on New Orleans’ famed Bourbon Street early Wednesday morning, killing more than a dozen people dead and dozens injured.

The truck Din Jabbar was driving was rented from peer-to-peer car rental company Turo, as was the Cybertruck that caught fire in Las Vegas. Din Jabbar’s rental vehicle also had an ISIS flag on the trailer hitch.

Schwartz said the FBI believes the Las Vegas explosion was an isolated incident.

McMahill said he didn’t know if the two were connected but wouldn’t rule it out. He also said the Cybertruck did not have an ISIS flag like the truck in New Orleans, but that all aspects were being investigated.

The current preliminary investigation involves the opinions of Tesla CEO Musk. McMahill said that Musk provided a lot of information about how to lock the vehicle through the force of the explosion after it exploded.

Musk also helped capture surveillance footage from Tesla charging stations across the country.

The billionaire took to his social media platform X to update fans on the Cybertruck explosion.

Musk wrote: “We have now confirmed that the explosion was caused by very large fireworks and/or a bomb carried in the bed of the rented Cybertruck and had nothing to do with the vehicle itself. All vehicle telemetry data came back positive at the time of the explosion. ” in an article.

“Evil fools chose the wrong vehicle to carry out a terrorist attack. The Cybertruck actually controlled the explosion and directed it upward,” he said in another post. “Not even the glass door in the lobby was broken.”
