Lara Trump announces her resignation as Republican National Committee co-chair, amid rumors she may run for Florida Senate seat

She begins serving as co-chair of the Republican National Committee in March 2024, but has been widely discussed as considering potential options for her father-in-law, President-elect Donald Trump, to re-enter the White House.

“With this huge win, I feel like my time has come,” she said. “What I wanted to do has been accomplished.”

Trump, who has only served as co-chairman since March, has played a key role in Republicans regaining control of the Senate while maintaining a slim majority in the House.

There are rumors that she may be considered to replace Florida Senator Marco Rubio after Trump said he would appoint him as the next secretary of state.

Last month, she told Fox News’ Sean Hannity that she was “willing to serve the people of Florida” and “willing to consider” filling the seat if asked.

On Sunday, Trump discussed with Howard Kurtz what an honor it would be to be considered.

“Certainly, we’ve all had the opportunity over the past nine years to be fully involved in politics, to understand the American people, to understand what they want, and we’ve been Florida residents for over three years,” she said. “It would be a real honor if this was something that was put in front of me.”

Meyer Musk, the mother of Tesla CEO Elon Musk, is one of many pushing for her to replace Rubio.

“The Senate is an old man’s club. We desperately need a smart, young, outspoken woman to reveal their secrets,” she posted on

Elon Musk seemed to agree with his mother, saying in reply to her X post: “Laura Trump is really awesome.”

Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham said on “Hannity” that he “would be very excited” and that Republicans “can’t do a better job than Lara Trump.”

Ultimately, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who is reportedly considering replacing Pete Hegseth, will choose Rubio’s successor.

Michael Whatley will continue to serve as chairman of the Republican National Committee.
