Jon Stewart grimaces over Harris being forced to certify Trump’s election victory

In one of this week’s viral media moments, comedian Jon Stewart compared presiding over Vice President Kamala Harris’ certification of her election defeat to being mocked at her “own funeral.”

As is customary, a joint session of Congress convened on Monday to count the Electoral College votes and formally certify the results. As Senate President, Harris lost the November election to President-elect Donald Trump, joining two other vice presidents in recent history who also had to lose presidential elections.

Liberal late-night hosts, including Stewart, cringed at the uncomfortable situation as they joked about it on their shows Monday night.

“Of course, the biggest insult on January 6th of this year is that Donald Trump’s opponent, Kamala Harris, is the emcee because she’s the vice president,” Stewart responded on “The Daily Show,” referring to the 1 Ceremony held on September 6th.

“Poor baby…but it sure sucks,” Stewart added.

Stewart played a video clip of Harris reading out the Electoral College votes Trump had received, and the chamber erupted in cheers.

“That must have stung,” Stewart later said with a grimace.

“She said, ‘Well, I can hear you,'” he continued. “It’s like attending your own funeral and even the mourners say, ‘Wow!'”

“I can’t imagine anything more uncomfortable than standing there and having an audience applaud your opponent,” he said.

Democrats erupted in cheers after Harris read her electoral votes, and Stewart joked, “There was a lot of joy in that room. I think she can still win this thing!”

“She only needs to find about 130,000 votes in Georgia! And then some in Michigan, Pennsylvania, maybe Wisconsin. Maybe North Carolina…” He trailed off.

The comedian concluded the segment by praising the civility of the certification ceremony.

“It’s amazing how well our democracy works when you lose and you don’t act like a little jerk. Not naming names! Just saying it,” he said.
