Congresswoman asks Fort Liberty whistleblower to come forward after New Year’s Eve attack

A Florida congresswoman and Air Force veteran urges anyone who encounters New Orleans terrorist Shamsuddin Jabbar or Las Vegas bomber Matthew Liersberg at Fort Liberty (formerly Fort Bragg) person to contact her office.

She also requested information about failed assassin Ryan Routh, a former North Carolina man who was arrested at President-elect Donald Trump’s Florida golf course as he was allegedly about to Trump, who became commander-in-chief, was having a game, aiming his rifle at a fence.

Rep. Anna Paulina Luna wrote in a post: “If you are at Fort Bragg (Fort Liberty) and have any information about these three people but are afraid to report it to your Reporting up the chain of command, I can provide whistleblower protection and receive information.

Rouse, 58, is originally from North Carolina but most recently lived in Hawaii. Luna appeared to cite a recent report that Routh, a civilian with a lengthy criminal history, had visited Fort Bragg dozens of times.

Luna is a member of the House Oversight and Accountability Committee. Her office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The Army said Thursday that while Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Leifsberger both served at the North Carolina base, their time stationed there did not overlap.

In Las Vegas, Clark County Sheriff Kevin McMahill said that while both men traveled to Afghanistan in 2009, any potential connections there were still under investigation.

“We don’t have any evidence that they were in the same province, the same location or the same unit in Afghanistan,” McMahill said. “Again, there are other things that are still under investigation.”

He said both used the Turo app to rent the electric pickup truck used in the event.

From 2007 to 2015, Jabbar worked as a human resources specialist and IT specialist. From 2015 to 2020, he served as an IT specialist for the Army Reserve. Lifsberger is an active-duty Army Green Beret with the 10th Special Forces Group.

Lifsberg, 37, has been identified as the man responsible for a New Year’s Day explosion inside a Cybertruck filled with explosive flammable materials just steps from the front door of the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas.

Turning to potential motives, authorities on Friday released part of a “manifesto” left by Lifsberg, who wrote: “This is not a terrorist attack, but a wake-up call.”

Sheriff’s officials said post-traumatic stress disorder and ongoing family issues may also be factors.
