Jim Carrey says he’s retiring because he ‘needs the money’

Jim Carrey once said he would only return to acting if “an angel brings some kind of script written in golden ink.” Two years later, Carrey returned to making movies because he “needed the money.”
In 2022, ahead of the release of Sonic 2, Carrey announced that he would be taking a break from acting and revealed the only thing that would bring him back.
“Well, I’m retiring. Yeah, probably. I’m serious about it,” Carrey told Access Hollywood at the time. “It depends. If an angel comes with some kind of script written in golden ink and tells me this is really important to people, I’ll probably keep going, but I’ll take a break.”

He continued, “I really enjoy the quiet life, I really enjoy painting on canvas, I really enjoy my spiritual life, and I feel like — that’s something you’ll probably never hear other celebrities say. Yes, as long as time exists – I have enough time and I have done enough.
Now, Carrey is reprising his role as the evil Dr. Robotnik in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, which premieres in theaters on December 20.
“I came back to this universe because I could play a genius, which is a bit of a stretch. You know, I bought a lot of stuff and, frankly, I needed the money.”
During the film’s premiere in London on December 10, AP Entertainment mentioned Carrey’s previous statement about his retirement.
“You said in a past interview that if you got a script written by an angel in gold ink, you would come back,” the outlet told the star.
“That might be a bit of an exaggeration, yes,” Kerry replied with a laugh. “I came back to this universe because I could play a genius, which is a bit of a stretch. You know, I bought a lot of stuff and, frankly, I needed the money.”

“I feel like Hollywood is a spineless bunch of people, and it really feels like, ‘Oh, this is a very clear sign that we’re not a cool club anymore,'” Carrey added.
Smith burst into tears as he accepted the honor for “King Richard,” in which he plays Richard Williams, the father of Venus and Serena Williams. Carey said Smith’s behavior should have resulted in him being escorted from the venue.
King probed Carrey into Rock’s decision not to press charges against the “Ali” star over the slap, and from Carrey’s perspective, Rock didn’t “want trouble” at all due to the filing of the police report and subsequent press shelling. But Carey added that if he were in Locke’s shoes, an expensive lawsuit would quickly follow.
“I announced this morning that I was suing Will for $200 million because that video will live on forever,” Carrey said. “It’s going to be everywhere. You know, the insults are going to go on for a long time. If you want to yell in the audience or express disapproval or show disapproval or say something on Twitter or whatever – You don’t have the right to go on stage and punch someone in the face because they said something.

“I don’t have any problem with Will Smith. He did great things, but it wasn’t a great moment,” Carrey lamented. “It kind of casts a pall over everyone’s shining moment last night. You know, a lot of people worked really hard to get to that place and get their moment in the sun and because of the real hard work they put in And won the award.
Carrey seemed most disappointed that “it’s not easy to go through all the things you have to go through when you’re nominated for an Oscar,” and he felt Smith hijacked a moment of personal contact with Rock.
