I Always Fly With This Oprah-loved Travel Blanket

Long before most airlines got rid of blankets, I carried my own. I strongly dislike being cold and crave ultimate comfort on long-haul flights. The issues I had with past travel blankets were always the same: too thin, scratchy, or short. Through much trial and error, I finally landed on my tried and true travel companion: the E-Marie Travel Blanket. Apparently, I’m not alone in my love for the travel accessory, which Oprah selected as one of her Favorite Things in 2019.

There are multiple reasons to love this blanket, including its versatility. It can easily be transitioned from a scarf to a blanket, with a soft-brushed knit material that’s buttery-smooth against your skin. As a travel germaphobe, I also appreciate that it comes in an equally plush bag for easy storage; plus, it’s machine washable. Available in color options that include olive, heather gray, gold, and nude, you can stylishly match its scarf form with your favorite airport outfits. And you can opt for the Travel Blanket Set that includes a matching eye mask in the same ultra-soft material.

The mastermind behind this blanket is Eula Smith, who, like me, was looking for a travel blanket that provided portability and comfort. I’m inspired by her story as a Black, woman-owned business, and many of her other products have landed on Oprah’s Favorite Things list, including the Journey Hoodie and Boss Blanket Set — which includes an eye mask and large blanket duo.

If you love this product and want to support more Black-owned businesses that meet your travel needs, read on for some ideas from some of my favorite brands.

Pattern On the Go Kit

Pattern

Equally as fabulous as her fashion style, Tracee Ellis Ross’ hair is a force to be reckoned with. I, along with many other women, have tried to achieve her perfectly voluminous curls but have since realized healthy hair should really be my aim. Her haircare line, Pattern, meets those needs with products that hydrate, define, and detangle curly hair. I’ve recently fallen in love with woodsy scent of the moisturizing Palo Santo Collection, but when I’m on the road, I never forget to pack this On-the Go Kit, which includes travel-size bottles of Pattern’s Hydration Shampoo, Heavy Conditioner, and Leave-In Conditioner

Ries Reusable Travel Containers

Ries

As a frequent flyer, Megan Graham was constantly looking for travel-sized containers that would safely store her favorite beauty products without spills. That desire for better packing solutions inspired her to create Ries, which offers leak-proof reusable and washable travel containers. Each bottle is made from recycled plastic with a large opening that makes it easy to squeeze out your favorite liquids. Bottles can be purchased as a set or bundle, like this pack of best-sellers, or individually in 3.4-ounce or 1.7-ounce containers. I particularly love the airless pump design, which easily dispenses my favorite serums and conditioners — no more having to squeeze the life out of flimsy travel bottles.

Wndr Ln Self-care Kit

Wndr Ln

This practical pamper pack from Wndr Ln is a favorite of mine; it includes a satin hair tie, a protective hair wrap, and an eye mask, all of which fit in a handy included bag for travel. Each item is made from satin, and I always appreciate a brand that creates products that protect different hair textures.

Topicals Bermuda Faded Bundle

Topicals

If you suffer from skin discoloration due to acne marks or are just looking for a bit more glow while you’re on the go, this Topicals Faded Family bundle is a great solution that’s easy to pack. The trio features the brand’s Mini Faded Serum, Faded Under Eye Masks, and the new Faded Brightening + Cleansing Bar. I’m a big fan of the eye masks for their ability to depuff my under-eye area after long days of travel in particular.

Gap × HFR Tunic Shirt by Kaphill

GAP

In celebration of Black History Month, Gap has partnered with Harlem’s Fashion Row to release a 16-piece limited edition collection curated by six designers to reimagine the brand’s classic designs by playing with silhouettes and colors. The limited edition capsule features custom shirts and bespoke hoodies. This Tunic Shirt by designer Krystal Kaphill is one of my favorites from the line, particularly the cinched waist and soft cotton poplin material it’s made from. Other picks from the line that offer great casual travel shirt options include the Tie-front Shirt and a funky, multi-colored Patchwork Shirt, both by Bruce Glen.

Brother Vellies Ballet Flat

Brother Vellies

Founder Aurora James launched the shoe and accessory brand Brother Vellies in 2013, with a focus on traditional African design through handmade pieces that fuel artisanal jobs. Brother Vellies has never made a shoe that I don’t love, but I’m particularly smitten by the Lali Ballet Flat in Flamingo. The lace-up shoe is a chic modern take on a nostalgic classic style, and it can easily dress up any outfit — without committing to uncomfortable heels. James is also the creator of the Fifteen Percent Pledge, a campaign that encourages retailers to commit 15 percent of their shelf space to Black-owned businesses. In honor of Black History Month, Citi is matching purchases made with a Citi Credit Card in the Fifteen Shop through March 31 and donating it to the Fifteen Percent Pledge.

Andrea Iyamah Swimwear

Andreai Yamah

I’ve been a longtime fan of Andrea Iyamah’s clothing and swimsuits. The Nigerian designer’s attention to detail and pattern choices offer a kaleidoscope of color that I love to take on the road for any special dinner or beach day. I am heading to the Caribbean soon and have my eye on the Kuji One-piece Swimsuit, currently marked down 30 percent (although stock is limited!). The keyhole detail and pleated shoulder straps give it just the flare I love. This two-piece number shows off a unique corset design and stylish high waist, made in a rich golden hue.

Kin Apparel Satin Lined Bucket Hat

Kin

Philomina Kane launched KinApparel in an effort to make more inclusive hair accessories. The brand’s satin-lined bucket hat is a curly hair lifesaver, as its soft interior protects hair from hash fabrics that can cause tangles and breakage. The hat is also waterproof, with a soft exterior fabric made of 100 percent polyester. The Pink Sugar Thick Pullover sweatshirt is another great option to protect hair with its satin-lined hoodie while keeping you warm.

Diop Fanny Pack

Diop

I love a good fanny pack. It’s the perfect companion for any long travel day to conveniently store items. I also love an eye-catching design, and the Akira fanny pack from Diop fits the bill with eight multicolored prints made from 100 percent recycled material. It also offers plenty of pockets and internal compartments to keep your valuables safe.
