‘It is getting on my nerves!’ Passenger fumes over ‘lack of communication’ in travel chaos

Passengers have blasted airlines for poor communication amid major disruption at Heathrow Airport following a fire at an electrical substation in Hayes, London.

The airport has been closed until midnight on March 21, with travellers advised not to visit the terminals due to a major power outage.

Passenger Leslyn Kite Buxton said to GB News: “I was supposed to be flying out with my middle daughter. She had 12 days off work and asked if should we go somewhere hot. So we booked to go to Barbados.

“Forgive me if I look a little bit weary, I had no sleep last night. I was so excited to be in sunny skies.

“My daughter found me this morning at 6:10am to say there’s a fire at Heathrow we’re not going anywhere. Sadly, we were flying with British Airways, who I actually quite like.

“I’d been with them several times. They contacted me at 6:47am. So that’s a good half an hour. I’m upset. I know there’s people worse off than I am.

LATEST DEVELOPEMENTS

“But the lack of communication is really getting on my nerves, to be fair. We were told on the website that we were flying out tonight at 11:33pm, but all the news we’ve been told about today is that it’s closed for 24 hours.

“Compensation, nothing’s been said about that. It’s quite frustrating. It’s never happened to me before. I’ve travelled several times, so it is the waiting game. But the lack of communication really is is the key to situation here. I’m not the only person.

She added: “You get a drip of information. You’re told one thing and then you get another text through.

“Then someone hears something else on the radio and from another passenger, and it’s not clear. Sometimes they want to give you as little information as possible.”

The closure followed a massive blaze at a North Hyde substation late Thursday night, causing widespread power outages affecting the airport’s operations.

The scale of the disruption is unprecedented, with about 1,300 flights expected to be affected and an estimated 145,000 travellers impacted.

Issues could potentially continue for days, according to reports. The fire has also affected train schedules in the area, compounding travel difficulties.

Heathrow, the UK’s largest airport, typically manages around 1,300 air traffic movements daily. Last year, a record 83.9 million travellers passed through its terminals.

More than 16,000 homes in the area have also been left without power due to the substation fire. Over 150 individuals have been evacuated from nearby areas as a safety precaution.

The London Fire Brigade stated that the blaze was under investigation but there was “no suggestion” of foul play.

A Heathrow representative said: “While emergency teams are on site, we are uncertain about the timeline for reliable power restoration.”

The airport added they were “making every effort to address the issue as quickly as possible.”
