Ice-breaking operation underway to free Canadian freighter from Lake Erie

On the morning of Friday, January 24, icebreaking efforts were underway on Lake Erie near Buffalo, New York, to free the freighter Manitoulin from the ice.

The Canadian freighter became stuck in ice on Lake Erie after leaving Buffalo on Wednesday, with 17 people still on board, local news reported.

According to local media WKBW, the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) began trying to rescue the ship on Thursday and confirmed that the ship was not damaged and the crew on board was safe.
