How to prevent pipe freeze cracks and fires

Extremely cold weather is set to hit the Binghamton area this week, with the National Weather Service in Binghamton issuing a hazardous weather outlook, predicting wind chills as low as 25 degrees below freezing.

With the cold front approaching, if you must go out, it’s recommended to wear extra layers and bundle up. There are also some important steps to take to ensure your home is safe for the cold days and nights ahead.

Broome County Emergency Services Director Neil Hight says here are some ways you can prepare your home for extreme winter weather.

If you use a space heater, avoid these mistakes

“When the weather gets extremely cold, one of the biggest things we see is that residents will start looking for supplemental heating methods, such as wood stoves or space heaters,” Hite said. “These can be helpful, but only if they are safe , use it correctly.”

Haight recommends using only safe alternative heat sources, such as fireplaces, portable space heaters or small wood stoves, and “always ensure good ventilation.”

Make sure your home’s smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors and fire extinguishers are functioning properly.

If you choose to use a space heater, never plug it into an extension cord or power strip, and don’t place it where children can hit it, Haidt said.

Prevent pipes from freezing

Hite said his department has seen “a lot of fires” start when people try to use open flames to thaw frozen pipes.

Instead, Haight recommends taking the following steps to prevent pipes from freezing:

  • Open cabinet doors to allow more heat to reach uninsulated pipes under sinks or appliances near exterior walls.

  • Make sure the heating in your home is on and set to no lower than 55 degrees.

  • If you plan to be out and about, have someone check on your house every day to make sure the heater is still on to prevent freezing.

The New York State Department of Health further recommends keeping faucets in your home dripping slightly to avoid freezing pipes.

If your pipes freeze, Hite recommends the following:

  • Make sure you and your family know how to turn off the water in case a water pipe explodes. Stopping the flow of water will minimize damage to your home.

  • Never try to thaw pipes with an open flame or torch. Call a licensed plumber for assistance.
